The Master’s University men’s soccer team bolsters its roster for the 2017 season by adding 13 new student-athletes.

The Mustangs will open their season on Saturday, August 19 with a 1:30 p.m. match against Northwest (WA) on Reese Field.

Here are the new players:

Leonardo Anjos

After attending Trinity, Anjos competed for Hagerstown Community College where in 2016 he earned All-MDJUCO second-team honors, was named to the all-region team, and was pegged the team’s MVP.

Commenting on Anjos’ signing, TMU head coach Jim Rickard said, “Leonardo is a fantastic attacking midfielder from Brazil. He’s transferring in as a junior and is a skilled player who involves himself in the attack on both goals and assists. He’s a mature player with a tremendous soccer background.”

When not competing for the Mustangs, Anjos plans to study Business Administration.

Daniel Smith
Bloomfiled Hills, MI
Midfielder
Smith transfers to TMU from Grace College (Indiana), where he earned first-team all-league honors and the newcomer award after being a primary ball winner for the Lancers. Before his time at Grace, Smith crafted an impressive prep resume at Oakland Christian where he was an all-state midfielder, tallying a total of 73 goals and 57 assists. Additionally, Smith helped lead Oakland Christian to three district titles, two conference titles, and a regional title.

Commenting on Smith’s signing, Rickard said, “As a transfer from Grace College, Daniel is a skilled midfielder with great field vision and tactical awareness. He will be a great complement to our midfield.”

Smith plans to major in Business Administration.

Carlos Moreno
Bogota, Colombia

Moreno brings a wealth of experience to TMU as the newest Mustang appeared in the final round of the Bogota League, was named a Creativo Tournament Champion, placed third in the 2013 Atahualpa Tournament, and competed in the Colombia National Tournament under 17 Direct TV Cup. Off the pitch, Moreno earned a plethora of academic honor roll awards based on his excellence in the classroom.

Commenting on Moreno, Rickard said, “Carlos is a talented player from Colombia who plays on the left wing and is capable of playing in the middle, as well. He loves to take the opponent on in a 1v1 setting, but also loves to combine with others.”

Brayden Campos
Murrieta, CA
Defender
Campos looks to contribute to TMU’s squad as the future Mustang earned second-team All-Ambassador League honors, first-team All-South Valley league honors, was a two-time team MVP recipient, and a two-time All-CIF honoree at Calvary Murrieta Christian School. Notably, Campos also excelled on the gridiron as he helped lead the Warriors to two South Valley League championships and was named first-team all-league, first-team All-CIF, and first team All-Valley. Academically, Campos earned the school’s principal award, scholar-athlete honors, was an academic team champion, and was a member of the National Honor Society.

Commenting on Campos, Rickard said, “Brayden Campos is a high-level player from the Oceanside Breakers club team. He is an excellent defender who is very versatile and can play inside and outside. He is a team player who has a great air game, as well.”

Campos plans to major in Liberal Studies for a career as either a teacher or a firefighter.

Joe Moisant

Commenting on Moisant, Rickard said, “Joe is a fast and quick midfielder who competed for both Providence Classical Christian School and the Crossfire Premier club in Washington State. He has excellent skill and vision as well as speed. He should fit right into the university-level game.”

Moisant plans to major in Business Administration for a career as an entrepreneur.

Peter Mackay
Glasgow, Scotland
Defender
Mackay comes to TMU after competing in his hometown of Glasgow, Scotland. While studying at Glasgow Independent School, one of Mackay’s most notable highlights was being able to represent his country in a match against Australia. Additionally, Mackay also competed in cross country on the prep level.

“A defender from Scotland, Peter has played at an excellent level in the Scottish club soccer scene,” said Rickard. “He is a left-sided player who is most comfortable as a left back. It will take a little time to adjust to the California heat but he is expected to fit right in.”

Mackay plans to study Political Studies and Business Administration with an emphasis in finance while at TMU.

Sam Johnston
Woodstock, GA
Midfielder
Johnston joins TMU after competing for The King’s Academy, a member of the GICAA league. On the club level with Concorde Fire Elite, Johnston was a two-time Georgia Club Soccer State Cup Finalist, a Southern Region Premier League runner-up, and a Southern Regional quarterfinalist.

Commenting on Johnston’s signing, Rickard said, “Sam is another quality midfielder from an excellent club background with the Concorde Fire. He has played with high-level players and will fit right in. Coming off an injury he is working hard to be 100% by preseason.”

Johnston plans to major in Political Studies for a career as a politician.

Eddie Lopez
West Jordan, UT
Goalkeeper
Lopez joins the Mustangs after competing for the Salt Lake City Community College Bruins. Lopez’ background consists of being named goalkeeper of the year numerous times in competition leagues. At West Jordan High School, he was part of a regional championship team, one that was a state finalist, while earning a letter award for best goalkeeper.

“A junior college transfer goalkeeper from Utah, Eddie is a very athletic goalkeeper with a solid club background at Chivas Academy,” commented Rickard. “We are excited to add to our goalkeepers.”

Lopez plans to major in Biological Sciences for a career as a neurosurgeon.

Nicolas Moreno
Bogota, Colombia

Moreno joins TMU with an extensive background featuring a role as captain for an under 19 team for three years, trying out for a developmental team owned by the LA Galaxy, being a starter for an under 23 team, winning a championship with an under 23 team on two separate occasions, and finishing in third and fourth place, respectively, with an under 19 team.

“A solid defender from Colombia, Nicolas is most comfortable as a center back. He has excellent leadership skills and is a quality defender. As a true freshman he will have a chance to learn under our quality defense.”

Moreno plans to major in Communication for a career in ministry and communications.

Pablo Santiago
Santa Barbara, CA

A walk-on, Parsons looks to utilize his prep background in soccer from Bellevue Christian (Wash.) with the Mustangs. Notably, in addition to soccer, Parsons possesses an impressive multi-sport background by also competing in both football and basketball at Bellevue Christian.

Commenting on Parsons, Rickard said, “A hard-working and tenacious defender from Washington, Dylan walked on last spring and immediately impressed the coaching staff. He will compete for a position at the outside and inside back spots.”

Parsons currently majors in Business Administration.

Midfielder
Marroquin looks to contribute to TMU’s roster based on his extensive background at Hart High School and Real SoCal. On the club level, Marroquin led his team to a second-place finish in league and helped contribute to a number of pre-season tournament championships. At Hart, the newest Mustang led the Indians to a third-place finish in the Foothill League and helped lead his teammates to a Cesar Chavez High School tournament championship.

Commenting on Marroquin, Rickard said, “A midfield player from Real SoCal and Hart High School, Kevin will use his technical skill to compete at the university level. He is a hard-working player who is eager to learn under our quality midfield.”

Marroquin plans to major in Business Administration for a career in management.

Jonah Hydar
Santa Clarita, CA
Defender
Hydar joins TMU after competing at Hart High School, a member of the Foothill League. In his time as an Indian, Hydar led the squad to back-to-back Foothill League championships (2014-15), and the CIF final in 2015.

Commenting on Hydar, Rickard said: “A left defender by trade, Jonah has worked hard over the last year to recover from a nagging injury. He should be ready by preseason.”

Hydar plans to major in Computer & Information Sciences.

In 2016, TMU posted another winning record (11-7-2 overall, 5-4-1 GSAC) and advanced to the postseason for the sixth year in a row. Looking to build on last season’s marks, the Mustangs will feature a talented roster evenly mixed with veterans and new recruits.
