John Gasparyan, an off-duty Los Angeles Police Department officer and Canyon Country resident, died when his motorcycle crashed in Porter Ranch around 6:50 p.m. Thursday.

Gasparyan, 34, collided with a white sedan that was making a U-turn near the intersection of Tampa Avenue and Chatsworth Street, according to LAPD officials.

Gasparyan was gravely injured, and pronounced dead at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills.

The driver of the sedan remained at the scene and cooperated with first responders and investigators, officials said. The cause of the crash remained under investigation.

LAPD badge mourning“Tonight will be tough — we tragically lost a @LAPDVTD Officer to an off-duty traffic collision. Keep his family in your thoughts and prayers,” LAPD Chief Charlie Beck tweeted at 11:31 p.m.

“It is an awfully sad evening here for the Los Angles Police Department,” LAPD spokesman Josh Rubenstein told reporters Thursday night.

Gasparyan was a traffic collision investigator stationed at LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division.

“Our hearts are heavy today as we remember one of our own who dedicated himself to keeping our streets safe. “John is a champion,” read a tweet from the station this morning at 7:13.

Gasparyan, a resident of the Fair Oaks neighborhood in Canyon Country, was married with a 6-year-old daughter, officials said.

He would have turned 35 on October 12.
