College of the Canyons freshmen Joanna Roecker and Cassandra Lee both turned in scores of 79 to lead the Cougars to a second place team finish at the Western State Conference (WSC) event hosted by Glendale College at Brookside Golf Course on Monday.
Roecker and Lee tied for the individual third place mark, trailing only Georgia Shevitt (77) of Moorpark College and Michaela Klundt (72) of Antelope Valley College.
In the team standings, Santa Barbara City College (322) won the event, followed by Canyons (337) and third place Bakersfield (351).
AVC (359), Moorpark (360) and Citrus (382) ranked four through six to round out the field.
For Roecker, Monday’s round marked the fourth straight event in which the freshman, who goes by JoJo, has finished in the top four of the individual rankings. She has also carded scores of 79 or better on three of the last four tournaments.
Roecker currently ranks second in the WSC among players who have competed in all seven conference events, with an average score of 77.
Likewise for the Cougars, who trail only SBCC in the standings. The Vaqueros have finished first in every WSC tournament this season. Meanwhile, the Cougars have placed second in all but one tourney.
COC freshman Gina Chung shot a round of 87 on Monday to aid the Cougars’ effort. Chung is currently ranked 10th in the WSC individual standings
Adelrina Kim also factored into the score for Canyons with her round of 92.
Alexandra Guerrero (99) and Stephanie Blin (100) also competed, but had their scores dropped from the final tally.
Canyons will next tee off at the WSC event hosted by Moorpark College at Simi Hills Golf Course on Monday, Oct. 23.
From there, the Cougars will move on to the WSC Finals which will be held Oct. 29-30 at Bakersfield Country Club.
