In a battle for Western State Conference, East Division supremacy, it was College of the Canyons that came out on top Tuesday night, as the Cougars scored two second half goals to secure a 2-0 win against visiting Antelope Valley College. Justine Hoeft and Jennifer Roney collected goals for the Cougars (11-2, 2-0).
Just over a minute into the contest, AVC (8-3-1, 1-1-1) had the first scoring chance but COC goalkeeper Jordan Burrow secured the shot with ease.
Less than two minutes later, Crystal Sanchez had the first chance for the Cougars, but her left-footed shot found the waiting arms of the goalie.
In the sixth minute, Roney had a flying header from just inside the box that sailed over the bar.
Later, in the 23rd minute it was Angel Quintero finding the back of the net with a beautiful header, but the goal was negated by a controversial offsides call.
With under eight minutes left in the opening period, Alondra Solis fired a shot from just outside the box that banged off the post. Seven minutes later, Roney found herself free on a run, but her shot also hit the left post and the two teams entered halftime scoreless.
Six minutes into the second half, Hailey Phipps took a free kick that found the foot of Crystal Sanchez, whose shot went wide left.
In the 64th minute, Solis found some space outside the box and found another shot that hit the post, the third one for the Cougars on the night.
Less than a minute later, Roney came up with another opportunity for COC but her diving header found the hands of the AVC goalkeeper.
With just over 20 minutes remaining, Canyons was awarded a free kick near the corner. The pass found Sanchez who delivered a shot that was blocked, but Roney fired a shot that snuck just inside the far post, giving the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.
Six minutes later, Alyssa Sanchez of AVC found herself free on a breakout. Her shot snuck past Burrows but Phipps swooped in at the last second and cleared the ball just before it crossed the goal line.
In the 85th minute, Hoeft delivered a perfect ball to Roney down the right side. Roney gave the ball right back and after one touch, Hoeft blasted a shot just inside the post for the Cougars’ second goal.
Canyons will be on the road for the next four games, starting Friday, Oct. 20, with a match at Victor Valley College. Kickoff is set for 4 p.m.
