Extending the Halloween spirit, the College of the Canyons Valencia campus MakerSpace will host an eco-zomBEE Robot Challenge at the Valencia Campus on Thursday, Nov. 2 from noon to 2 p.m.
The challenge involves student teams maneuvering eco-friendly zomBEE robots in collecting pollen and nectar on a challenging Halloween-themed native garden course.
The free competition is open to all COC students.
Prior to the competition, teams were provided with a free LEGO MindStorms 9797 robot kit to create eco-zombEE robots outfitted in a costume and accessories.
At the competition, teams must guide their robots through a Halloween-themed native garden course, while gathering pollen and nectar at different heights on native flowers scattered throughout the course. Teams will be timed during this portion of the competition.
Each magnetic pollen gathered by an eco-zomBEE at a male flower must be deposited at a female flower in order to earn a point.
Points will also be awarded for the extent of nectar gathered by eco-zomBEEs and deposited in a beehive.
Teams can “steal” pollen and nectar from another team’s eco-zombEE, but only while those materials are in transit.
Bonus points will be awarded to eco-zomBEEs that participate in a half-time dance-off to a short music clip of their choice.
Prizes will be awarded to winning teams based on time and points earned.
Free food and refreshments will be served.
COC MakerSpace is located on the COC Valencia campus, inside the Student Center and adjacent to the cafeteria.
