Hannah OstromHannah Ostrom scored a career-high 25 points and The Master’s University women’s basketball team overcame some nine-day rust to beat CalTech 87-58 Saturday afternoon in Pasadena.

“It looked like we’ve been off for nine days,” Head Coach Dan Waldeck said. “We need to be able to implement practice characteristics into every game no matter when and where it’s played.”

Ostrom tallied eight of her career-high total in a first quarter that featured a couple of three-pointers. She finished with four field goals from behind the arc, also a career-high.

However, the Beavers were a pesky bunch and they were even with the Mustangs at the end of the first period 20-20.

After giving up that many points in the initial stanza, the Mustangs clamped down on the hosts in the second quarter, allowing just five points while the offense continued to click.

An Anika Neuman layup with 6:43 remaining in the second stanza snapped a 23-all tie and the Mustangs kept the Beavers scoreless in a seven-minute window while scoring 19 consecutive points to take a 42-25 advantage into halftime.

The tempo of play shifted back to the offensive side for both clubs in a prolific third quarter that featured a combined 51 points.

Brooke Bailey ignited the 28-point period for the Mustangs with a trifecta 23 seconds into play and Ostrom buried another trey with 8:58 remaining to give TMU a 48-26 lead.

The Beavers never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way and when Ostrom drained her final three-pointer of the afternoon with 36 seconds left in the quarter, the Mustangs had a 70-46 lead.

The Mustangs shot 50% (8-16) from the field in that quarter, highlighted by a 4-7 performance from behind the arc.

Just as they had in the second quarter, the Mustangs tightened things up on the defensive end in the final period, allowing the Beavers just two points in the first 6:23 of play.

The Mustangs enjoyed a couple of 34-point leads in the fourth stanza, the final one at 87-53 with 2:23 left to play on a Hannah Kazar free throw.

Ostrom’s career-high outing featured a 7-10 showing from the field, including 4-5 from behind the arc, and a perfect 7-7 from the stripe. Bailey tossed in 17 points and Neuman added 15 more while both pulled down seven rebounds apiece.

Freshman Jessica Soares grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as the Mustangs outrebounded the Beavers 52-40.

“Hannah O, Brooke, and Anika definitely picked up the scoring slack with Hannah Forrar out and we’ll need more people to play even better when we face Evangel on Thursday.”

That game against the Crusaders from Missouri will tip off next Thursday evening at 7:00pm on Bross Court.
