The list of Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, released recently, was backloaded with four athletes from The Master’s University.
That’s not to say the Mustangs were way down on the list, just that their four honorees all played in the midfield or on the back line this season.
Midfielders Benjamin Tembo and Jonathan Brown and defenders Matt Logan and Taylor Howard each followed up Golden State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete nods with spots on the NAIA’s list of 492 athletes.
This after the Mustangs went 12-6-2 this year and advanced to the GSAC semifinals for the third consecutive year.
In order to be nominated, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale, must appear on the eligibility certificate for the sport and have attended two full years as a non-transfer or one full year as a transfer.
On the field, Tembo was named the GSAC’s Player of the Year after leading the conference in every offensive category. His 17 goals were the program’s most in a season since 2001 when Anthon Brueggeman netted 22.
Brown finished the year with two goals and six assists, while Logan and Howard helped the Mustangs to seven shutouts, two coming in the team’s final four games.
