Joseph Wayne Monroy, a South Gate man charged with the murder of a Newhall man in January 2016, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Los Angeles Superior Court in San Fernando today, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office.
“He was sentenced to 21 years in prison” by Judge David Stuart in San Fernando Superior Court Division I, according to Sarah Adalani, a DA public information officer.
Monroy was charged with the murder of Rudy Gonzalez, 21, outside a Newhall apartment building in the 20900 block of Costa Brava on January 21, 2016.
A witness at the scene of the shooting recognized Gonzales, who was arrested four days later when he attempted to steal a car in South Gate, one of the communities Gonzales listed as his residence.
Authorities there recognized his photo from a flyer about the Newhall shooting and took him into custody.
