1945 - Actors Harry & Olive Carey sell Saugus ranch after 29 years; now Tesoro del Valle [story]
Carey Ranch

On the eve of the student walkout planned for Wednesday, parents from the Saugus Union School District were recently informed of the district’s plans regarding the scheduled event. Superintendent Joan Lucid released the following statement on Monday to SUSD parents:

March 12, 2018

Dear Parents,

As educators, we have the sacred responsibility to not only teach students, but to help them grow and thrive. We take this responsibility with the utmost seriousness, yet sometimes traumatic events cast it in a new light. Safety is always priority one and the horrific events of the past two months have created a greater need for diligence and vigilance regarding safety on our campuses. We continue to review and update our safety processes and procedures as well as encourage everyone to assist with “if you see something, say something”.

I want to let you know that we are aware of the media coverage of scheduled student walkout dates on March 14, March 24 and April 20. As an elementary district we are not participating in these events and I encourage you to talk with your children about recent events as you see appropriate. We respect and support students’ voices and would ask that if individual children need support or an opportunity to discuss their feelings, that you speak with their teachers and/or let your site administrator know so there is support for your child.

In light of media coverage of scheduled student walkout dates, I have received communications from various sources and want to share with you what we are doing. Although we don’t anticipate any student action, we want to assure you that we will encourage students to stay on the campus. If there should be a walkout, you should be aware that our site administrators will contact law enforcement, notify parents of any disruption, take appropriate actions to address student safety and assist in bringing students back on campus.

Nothing is more important than ensuring our schools are as safe as possible. Please feel free to contact your school administrator with questions or concerns related to the walkouts or broader issues related to school climate and security. In the meantime, please know that the Saugus Union School District is committed to fostering academic and personal success for every child and that ensuring the safety of our students is our highest priority. As always, we appreciate your support.

Respectfully,
Joan M. Lucid, Ed.D.
Superintendent

    • Why is this disappointing?? They valued education over politics

    • Mitch Bower Mitch Bower says:

This is not politics, it is school safety.

    • Clearly you didnt get much of an education Mitch. To begin its disappointing, not disapointing…must have been worried about your safety when in school

    • Trilce Eli Trilce Eli says:

Daniel Rollins obviously you didn’t have to be concern about your safety. How many kids died in school shooting when you were in school? This is the current situation in schools. Something has to be done.

    • William Reel William Reel says:

Mitch Bower Everything is Politics with Libtards like you.

    • Trilce Eli, Columbine happened when I was a freshman at Saugus High. Safety in schools was very real. I became very aware of my exit routes and what I had to do if I wanted to live through a school shooting. Incase youre too young or uneducated to know in 1966 14 people were killed and 31 others injured in a shooting at the University of Texas. Its better to keep your mouth shut and let people think youre stupid then to open your mouth and prove them right…

    • Mike Curtis Mike Curtis says:

Uh, Daniel, the number of dead children has grown just a wee bit since then. Maybe instead of verbally assaulting a fellow community member expressing an opinion, you could do a little more fact checking on your end. Who knows, you might find some common ground with them.

    • Mike Curtis if that is a verbal assault your panties are wound too tight. Everyone is free to express their opinion but be prepared to be challenged on it, there are those that may not agree with said opinion.

Something does need to be done. Societies glorification of violence is a great place to start understanding why so many have been desensitized to violent actions and their convictions.

Live by the sword, die by the sword.

  1. Joseph Brown Joseph Brown says:

If my kid ever walked out of school for anything other than getting there or leaving there, it would be in his best interest to not stand in front of me that night. These are kids. Their opinions can be expressed properly like an adult or not taken seriously, like an immature adult’s. However, walking out of school and wasting his teacher’s time would earn him a red ass and I would expect any respectable school to not have him back till he wrote and read an apology to the faculty for being being a little jack ass.

  2. Nope they need to walk

  3. William Reel William Reel says:

Good. They’re there to learn, not to be politicized by Leftist robot “teachers” and administrators.

  4. Good!!!!!! Our kids go to school to learn! I’m so glad they made this wise choice!!

  5. KJ Slo KJ Slo says:

    Good! Stay in school!

  6. Agreed! Our elementary children should not be involved in this. They go to school to learn.

  7. Good walk out is stupid

  8. Michael Born Michael Born says:

    Jen Sherman thank god!

  9. Walking out will not solve anything. I am glad their priorities are appropriate

  10. #walkup #kindness #makeanewfriend

  11. Saugus Union is only K-6th grades! A bit young to be expected to protest don’t you think? I agree with the School District.

  12. Not surprised This racist city loves rump

  13. Jeanne says:

Mark Curtis Your vulgar language shows a lack of vocabulary. Daniel is correct in pointing out to the young woman that she seems ignorant of anything that happened prior to the last 20 years. I also am tired of seeing young people think they are the first ones to experience hard choices. Get over yourselves.

Our schools are not to be political soap boxes.
Have an after school or weekend rally if you wish. Most kids that take part are NOT concerned about the issue but love the idea of getting out of school for the day. How do I know? I was a kid and have raised 4.

  14. Roger says:

    MY GOODNESS.

  15. George Palmer says:

Congratulations SUSD administrators. It is heartening to see modern day educators atypically exhibit truly mature and responsible leadership in a difficult environment. Hard decisions like this one require the type of clear headed adult decision making exhibited in this emotionally charged environment. Well done!

  16. “Everybody has the right to be seen and heard. It’s our legacy. It’s how we ensure our value is passed on and kept alive. It’s how we don’t disappear. Listening to and truly seeing another person is one of the most important things we can do for each other.” — Lindsay Schlick

  17. Gavin says:

GOOD! The purpose of school is to learn math, science, literature, etc

  18. Irma Blanco Irma Blanco says:

Booooooooo?????? glad my child no longer attends school in this district!

  19. Mke Garrett says:

I applaud the choice of education over propaganda. Regardless of the issue, the use of children to promote a political agenda is harmful to the students and inexcusably shameful. My appreciation to the district for choosing to protect the children in it’s care.
