1993 - Hart High grad Dee Dee Myers (1979) becomes first female White House press secretary [story]

Fale Avin’s two-out RBI single in the top of the 11th sent No. 5 Oklahoma past the CSUN softball team 2-1 Monday afternoon.

Jocelyn Alo smacked her 12th home run of the season in the top of the first to give the Sooners an early 1-0 lead. Oklahoma threatened in the top of the second. The first two Sooners reached base.

Lea Wodach’s sacrifice bunt attempt was popped out and caught by Kenedee Jamerson, the Matadors’ first baseman in foul territory. A Jilian James walk loaded the bases. James came back and struck out Eilyah Flores before getting Sydney Romero, Oklahoma’s leading hitter (.532) to line out to right to end the inning.

Jamerson led off the CSUN third with an infield single. Pudi Hernandez pinch-ran for Jamerson and made it to second on a Mackenzie Babbitt groundout.

Savannah Horvath‘s infield single advanced Hernandez to third. Kira Cauley‘s infield single loaded the bases. Megan Stevens‘s sacrifice fly plated Hernandez. The ball was hit deep enough to allow Horvath and Cauley to move up a base. Journey Rojas grounded out to third to complete the frame.

Paige Parker relieved Paige Lowary to start the CSUN fifth and she retired nine in a row. James retired 17 of the final 19 batters she faced to send the game into extra innings. Caleigh Clifton recorded OU’s first hit since Alo’s home run with one out in the Sooners’ eighth. Alo grounded into a 1-6-3 double play to wrap up the inning.

Parker hit Babbitt with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Horvath popped out to third. Cauley lined out to third to send the game to the ninth. Stevens walked to open the Matadors’ ninth. Rojas’ sac bunt attempt was popped up and caught by a sliding Romero, the Oklahoma third baseman. Raquel Jaime struck out as did Jessica Alexander to finish the inning.

With one out in the top of the 10th, James hit Kelsey Arnold. Raegan Rogers successfully sacrificed Arnold to second. Romero grounded out to short to keep the game at 1-1. CSUN was kept off the board in the 10th. Alo walked with one out in the top of the 11th. Nicole Pendley attempted to put down a sac bunt but was called for batter’s interference for the second out. One pitch after Babbitt nearly tracked down a shot in the left field territory, Avin singled to right to right center to drive in Alo. Thanks to a Hendley diving catch in the bottom of the 11th, Parker retired the Matadors in order.

Lowary and Parker combined on a three-hitter for the 25-2 Sooners. Parker did not allow a hit in seven innings of relief and struck out five. James went the distance, throwing 159 pitches, 92 for strikes. She allowed three hits and struck out six.

“That was fun softball, when you are playing making plays and playing well,” said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. “Oklahoma’s entire pitching staff is great, so when you are able to get on base, you have to capitalize at some point and that’s what they did. JJ did a phenomenal job and they came up with the big hit when they needed it.”

CSUN (11-22) hosts the Matador Classic this weekend. Action begins at 9:30 a.m. on Friday when the Matadors take on Pacific.
