Working through a series of challenging circumstances including fires, weather and mudslides that struck the region, Lundgren Management successfully completed the Santa Barbara City College West Campus Center Project in time for classes to begin on Jan. 22.
“The entire project team did an amazing job of overcoming those challenges and completing this project on time,” said Shawn Fonder, Lundgren’s vice president of program and client services. “The project represents a significant addition to the Santa Barbara City College campus, and we’re extremely proud of the finished product.”
The West Campus Center project is a new building on the West Campus side of the college. The new building becomes the most prominent visual landmark when entering the traffic drop-off and turnaround on the West Campus.
The multi-story building features exterior terraces with an ocean view, open air stairways, a welcoming entry boulevard and a pedestrian bridge at the second level. There are 23 classrooms, 15 faculty offices, multiple student gathering spaces, a conference room and a faculty break room along with the supporting building services such as restrooms, janitorial spaces, electrical and mechanical rooms.
Energy efficiency was a key factor in the project’s design and construction. The West Campus Center was originally designed with a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) goal of Silver. However, the target goal has been expanded to achieve LEED Platinum.
The Lundgren Management team, led by Senior Project Manager Gina DeTolve, served as the construction manager for the project. Other key project team members included KBZ Architects (architect of record), Sandy Pringle Associates (DSA inspector), Stantec (civil engineer), Kanda Tso (structural engineer), Calpec/DHA (MEP engineer), Innovative Workshop Consulting (LEED consultant) and Glumac (commissioning agent).
“Between the Thomas Fire, the weather and the ensuing mudslides, all of which had devastating impacts on the Santa Barbara region, the last few months of this project presented some pretty unusual challenges,” Fonder said. “We’re proud to say the entire team rose to those challenges, as well as the other challenges that are typical of any major construction project, and delivered a valuable addition to the campus that will make the SBCC community proud.”
