The Castaic Union School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved a three-percent raise and a bonus for its educators at last week’s board meeting.
Both the Castaic Teachers Association and the California School Employees Association representatives were thrilled with the decision and praised the board for its efforts during the annual negotiation process.
All Castaic educators and support staff will receive a three percent raise and an additional one percent bonus this year. Thursday night’s board meeting marks the first significant Board-approved raise in 12 years.
“We have been waiting for this moment for a long time,” said Laura Pearson, Board president. “Our teachers and staff deserve all the resources and support we are able to provide. We are very grateful for CTA’s and CSEA’s patience during these past years, as well as our district staff for working attentively with our finances to make this raise possible.”
The Board requested district staff to complete two separate reviews of the salary increase. One review was conducted by district staff and another by an outside auditor to ensure the raise was a sustainable increase.
The approval also granted an opportunity for educators who have been employed by the district for at least 15 years to retire with health benefits until the age of 65. The decision will allow teachers who are ready to retire to feel secure by still having access to their health benefits as they wait to become eligible for Social Security.
“As a Board, we want to support our educators even after they decide to leave the classroom,” Pearson said. “Due to the rising cost of health insurance, we want to alleviate some of the stress of planning for retirement.”
