1986 - COC board votes to allow Argentine cliff swallows to nest forever on sides of buildings [story]

Statewide initiative measures declared eligible Tuesday for the November election include a bond to fund water projects, property tax base transfer, regulation of kidney dialysis clinics, and splitting California into three states.

The four measures each earned enough voter signatures to qualify for the ballot, California Secretary of State Alex Padilla announced Tuesday.

Voter approval of “Three New States Within the Current Boundaries of California” or “Cal 3” initiative would initiate a process on January 1, 2019 to secure judicial, state state and congressional approval for the three new states — Northern California, California and Southern California. The process would have a one-year deadline for completion.

In this scenario, Los Angeles County and the Santa Clarita Valley would be in California.

Northern California, or a name to be chosen by the people of that state, would include the following 40 counties: Alameda, Alpine, Amador, Butte, Calaveras, Colusa, Contra Costa, Del Norte, El Dorado, Glenn, Humboldt, Lake, Lassen, Marin, Mariposa, Mendocino, Merced, Modoc, Napa, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Siskiyou, Shasta, Tehama, Trinity, Tuolumne, Sacramento, San Joaquin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Sierra, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Sutter, Yolo and Yuba.

California, or a name to be chosen by the people of that state, would include the following six counties: Los Angeles, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura.

Southern California, or a name to be chosen by the people of that state, would include the following 12 counties: Fresno, Imperial, Inyo, Kern, Kings, Madera, Mono, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego and Tulare.

If passed, Cal 3 would represent the first split of a state since 1863, when West Virginia broke from Virginia in 1863 during the Civil War.

The initiative was championed by Silicon Valley venture capitalist Tim Draper, who was unsuccessful in getting a six-state split he proposed in 2013 onto the 2016 ballot.

  1. California works better a whole then divided

    • Virginia seems to be doing just fine, as do the Dakotas and Carolinas.

    • Carolinas split up before the Revolutionary War even started, WV broke off during the Civil War, and the Dakotas (half of which came from leftover Minnesota Territory) formed in the 1880s (of which Montana, Idaho, Nebraska, and Wyoming broke out of that territory as well). Methinks how they got to be “doing just fine” don’t really apply to 2018.

    • Sure it does. 150 years later, WV is fine. I’d expect the same to be true 150 years from now if CA did this split. There is no law that says the current 50 states must maintain their current size for the rest of eternity. CA is such a huge state. I’ve never had issue with people in SoCal feeling under represented in Sacto.

    • Alan Klein Alan Klein says:

Well the Dakotas were a single Territory kept shrinking as states evolved into separate states. Not exactly the same scenario as the other breaks. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dakota_Territory

  2. Mandy Day Mandy Day says:

They just want 6 liberal senators to force socialism upon the entirety of the nation. Silly to waste time on this pipe dream

    • Wil Navarro Wil Navarro says:

Actually a conservative thought this up. Do you change you’re stance now?

    • Wil Navarro Exactly this is how these Morons are trying to gain seats for republicans . Lying bastards !

    • Wil Navarro they will always blame liberals for what crap republicans want

    • Mandy Day Mandy Day says:

Previous iterations were drawn up by liberals, doesn’t change the underlying net effect. A short interim of better governance for certain regions would soon have to grapple with the realities of unfunded pension liabilities. Dems bought votes with unions and immigrants using programs that are unsustainable. It’s tempting to look for an easy fix, but at this point letting liberals run it into the ground maybe the best option, reality is the best antidote for liberal dogma

  3. Not a good idea…. There would be 6 senators.. all liberals..

  4. This will just give the federal government 2 to 4 MORE socialist senators ….’California ‘ would stay with 2 socialists ….’Northern California’ would have 2 socialist senators.. .’Southern California’ might elect 2 somewhat conservatives unless the other 2 Californias stack the population in So Cal…but the good part is if the southern California state stays conservative they have the boarder and they would have strict boarder security …

  5. Not much can help CA until people wise up and get the liberal loons out of office. Grew up there and raised some of my kids there but when we had the chance to get out we did. Thank the Lord!

  6. calif. has gone to the dogs the people running that state had run it to the ground. brown is a asshole he has put others before americans.

  7. Ana De Hoyos Ana De Hoyos says:

Whoever proposed this, fears us as a whole state.

  8. This is a distraction. Solves nothing.

  9. No thank you. Besides more government there would be much less water!

  10. Not sure how I feel about this, I do not like the green section I am in ?

  11. So I need to move where it’s yellow?

  12. You just need to move if you can out of state and leave Cali to Jerry and the illegals and socialists

  13. Is Cali going to pay to add 2 more stars into the flag?

  14. Ashley Swann Ashley Swann says:

    Yeah, this is a joke

  15. Sameer Kang Sameer Kang says:

California is the largest economy in the United States, and as of late April, the 5th largest economy worldwide.

This proposal is a mistake of epic proportions. It solves absolutely nothing and seems more focused on causing the country harm as a whole, than genuinely achieving anything of value.

It’s suspicious that it’s ended up on the general ballot and I question why voters of this state genuinely think, with all facts accounted for and considered, that they will better off in this situation.

  16. So does that mean everyone has to get new drivers license and new plates for the state you come under? New court rules. New Social Security changes. CRV will change. Each state will need a State Capital.
New laws. Wow! Who can think of other changes.?

  17. Not going to happen. Federal gov wouldn’t let it happen anyways.

  18. You think you are taxed now ?

  19. I’m a 5th generation Californian. Please do NOT split up our beloved California. She is fine as she is.

  20. The man that is spearheading the California Split Initiative is a venture capitalist. His motives are obvious as he would rape California blind.

  21. I heard on the news, and I still trust the news, that only 17% favorable, don’t think that gets it done

  22. Doesn’t change a thing . As long as we have we have socialist progressives democrats California will spiral into a third world hell hole.

  23. jim says:

    War is Peace.

    Freedom is slavery.

    Ignorance is strength.

And so we all believe in and strive for (if not to busy or ignorant) the future that we build for ourselves. Every single one of us (and our cute little groupings) is part owner of the future we bring upon ourselves, our families, and our larger memes such as “states” and “countries”.

Stick around folks! You ain’t seen nothin’ yet!

  24. KJ Slo KJ Slo says:

    Vote no on this cr8p!

  25. travis Levy says:

If this split made the ballot then can we put on another ballot that Pruis’s get their own lane. I mean if were separating people/life styles then why can we separate drivers.

  26. Conor says:

So dumb, how about we make a limit of how many people can come live in Cali because there is to Many people
