The state of California has a list of more than 10,000 known individuals in illegal possession of firearms, but has not provided adequate resources for law enforcement to recover their weapons, Assemblyman Dante Acosta (R-Santa Clarita) said in a statement Friday.
Acosta’s statement follows the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s seizure of more than 500 firearms from the Agua Dulce home of a felon legally forbidden from possessing firearms.
“Keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals is vital to public safety,” Acosta said. “In the fight against gun violence, Californians deserve results. My Republican colleagues and I have called for the state to provide proper funding to law enforcement to get guns out of the hands of known criminals.”
Acosta and his fellow Republicans have called for more funding for law enforcement to address the 10,000 person backlog of the Armed Prohibited Persons System database.
The APPS database tracks people who own firearms, but have lost their right to own a gun due to a criminal offense or being deemed a danger to themselves or others due to mental illness.
The request for funding of the APPS program can be found here.
