Nightly lane closures are scheduled to start Monday on Sierra Highway near Highway 14 as crews begin a paving project in and near the city of Santa Clarita, the California Department of Transportation announced Friday.

The project will repave more than 19 lane miles on Sierra Highway between the Interstate 5-Highway 14 interchange and Friendly Valley Parkway.

C.A. Rasmussen, Inc., of Valencia, is the contractor on the $2.4 million project, which will extend the life of the roadway and produce a smoother roadway surface, improving ride quality.

The project funding comes from Senate Bill 1, California’s new transportation revenue.

The work is scheduled to occur on Monday through Friday nights, with no work scheduled on weekend nights. The project will be done in sections, and lanes on Sierra Highway will be closed in only one direction at a time, either northbound or southbound.

Southbound lanes may be closed between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m., and northbound lanes may be closed between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m. Detours will be provided.

Closures are planned according to the following schedule, which is subject to change due to weather, operational issues or other reasons:

• Monday, Aug. 20, to Thursday, Aug. 23 – Northbound lanes from Placerita Canyon Road to Golden Valley Road.

• Aug. 24 and 27 – Northbound lanes from Golden Valley Road to Friendly Valley Parkway.

• Aug. 28 and 29 – Southbound lanes from Friendly Valley Parkway to Golden Valley Road.

• Aug. 30, Sept. 4-7 and Sept. 10-11 – Southbound lanes from Golden Valley Road to Placerita Canyon Road.

• Sept. 12-14 – Southbound lanes from Placerita Canyon Road to Newhall Avenue.

• Sept. 17-21 and Sept. 24-26 – Apply slurry seal.

• Sept. 27-28 and Oct. 1-4 – Install traffic sensor loops in pavement.

• Oct. 5 and Oct. 8-10 – Install lane stripes.

• Oct. 11-18 – Complete final details.

The project also will repave a segment of Sierra Highway between The Old Road and Foothill Boulevard, located at the I-5 undercrossing; and another segment of Sierra Highway at the Highway 14 undercrossing.

  1. They already started and I was up all night. Made a racket and all I see is a panted line!?

  2. So how long is this “project” going to take? How about completing the 5-frwy before this nonsense!

  3. Laura Howard Laura Howard says:

    Need to finish the freeway.

  4. Well that’s just wonderful, but when will Caltrans pave Sierra Hwy between Soledad and Vasquez?? That stretch of Highway is falling apart from all the pot holes, water leaks and patching, and all the traffic between the Antelope Valley and parts south…..

  5. Like the freeway, I’m sure it will take a few years to get done.

  6. Dale Andrews Dale Andrews says:

That’s wonderful news, nice to see some gas tax dollars⛽getting used here in the neighborhood.

  7. Jason White Jason White says:

Can they wait until after they finish the 5 freeway? The 14 has enough additional traffic already.

  8. Arti John Arti John says:

hmm, sierra highway is only a few miles from the 5 to friendly valley. where does 19 come from?

  9. The sky is falling!!!!!

  10. Lisa Bower Lisa Bower says:

This is nice but Sierra highway needs more work then just that. Those area are not as close to being damaged as from Soledad to Vasquez’s canyon rd. I guess the City does not think of that area as being in City limits. That area has been so bad for years. It is a roller coaster ride going through there.

  11. Need Sierra Highway above Soledad paved with center dividers planted, as promised homeowners 15 years ago!!!!

  12. Steve A Katz Steve A Katz says:

It’s NOT 19 miles. It’s “LANE MILES” 4 lanes at 1 mile = 4 miles. “The project will repave more than 19 lane miles on Sierra Highway between the Interstate 5-Highway 14 interchange and Friendly Valley Parkway.”

  13. Mike Naoum Mike Naoum says:

That’s good news. Thank SB1, the gas tax measure the Republicans want to overturn for funding this project. As said in other comments, there are plenty of other segments that need this done. Overturn SB1, you can be assured there will be much less repaving.

  14. Fred Rogers Fred Rogers says:

Why is everyone so mad? Jesus. Bunch of whiners.

    • Dennis says:

Fred, I couldn’t agree more. These whiners couldn’t do anything of substance on their own but like to gripe whenever responsible projects are planned.

  15. Sean says:

Mike, where is all the gas tax money prior to SB1? We seemed to do just fine without SB1, but now the world is being saved with it. Could it be that since we have more criminals on the street which equates to more homeless that our money got diverted to that.

Vote down the gas tax in November. Don’t be a Mike and fall for Jerry Brown’s BS and his bullet train to nowhere also.
