A decomposed body believed to be that of a missing Santa Clarita man was found in Stevenson Ranch Saturday.
While Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner/Coroner still has the body still listed as John Doe, church officials from Elevate Church in Newhall said on social media the body is that of Matthew Weiss, 21, from Stevenson Ranch, who has been missing since June 30. Weiss was described on Los Angeles County Sheriff Department’s Missing Persons bulletin as at-risk, who is bipolar and schizophrenic.
“We believed as a church that we would help a local family find their missing son after five weeks of disappearance,” Elevate Church posted on their Facebook page. “Our church rallied 60 volunteers and hit the community on Saturday, August 18. We specifically sent a team to search the same location police did previously and by God’s amazing grace we found Matthew.”
However, detectives at LASD’s Missing Persons Unit, who are handling the case, said identification could not be verified as of Tuesday at 11:47 a.m.
“No – we have not gotten confirmation on that,” LASD Sergeant Sandra Nava said. “It hasn’t been confirmed by the coroner’s yet.”
Calls to Elevate Church have not yet been returned.

Strange that the church would look for, find and say it’s him….
The mom was handing flyers and the pastor wanted to do more than just pass out flyers for her. So about 60 members of the church did a search and the body was found in a place he used to like to Hang out. I’m guessing the mom identified him.
The father did
The Sheriffs missed him! Never take for granted that a search was done well. I hope that he was not alive when they missed him. Maybe OD. Thank goodness the church had the smarts to search where others SAID they already had.
Pray for the parents who are going through so much pain now.
Sad that a church had to gather up 60 people to search and the cops didn’t continue to look! That poor mother?
He was one of my best friends from middle school he was a teltented skateboarder and a very funny individual. Hadn’t seen him since I was 13 but it still hurts my soul to know he was in pain to the point where he thought no one cared.
