1919 - Fire destroys abandoned second Southern Hotel, built 1878 in Newhall (corner Main & Market) [story]
Second Southern Hotel

Susan Christopher has decided not to run for re-election for her seat in Area D of the Castaic Union School District Board of Trustees, so the board has put out a call for applicants to take her place.

According to Education Code section 5326, if no one has been nominated for the office’s election by 5 p.m. on the 83rd day prior to the date fixed for the next Governing Board election, “appointment will be made as prescribed by Section 5328.”

Section 5328 states that if a district election is not held, or if no person has been nominated, “the governing board shall appoint a qualified person. . . at a meeting prior to the day fixed for the election, and such appointee or appointees shall be seated at the organizational meeting of the board as if elected at a district election.” (Emphasis added.)

In other words, if by Aug. 15 (83 days prior to the election), no candidate has been nominated, the Board is authorized to appoint a qualified person to the Board.

Such appointment must occur at a Board meeting prior to election day (Nov. 6, 2018) and the appointed member will be “seated” to the Board at the organizational meeting.

Unlike most vacancies, vacancies and appointments due to failure to elect result in the appointee serving “as if elected” for the full term.

Application packets are now available at the District Office, 28131 Livingston Avenue, Valencia, California, 91355.

Additional information is available from the Office of the Superintendent, 661-257-4500.

The application and information are also available on the District website at www.castaicusd.com.

In order to be eligible for appointment, you must live in Area D.

On the District website, under the District/Board tab click on the By-Trustee Area Boundary Map then click on the Interactive Trustee Boundary Map. You can type in your address to determine if you live within Area D and are a qualified candidate.

Deadline for the submission of completed applications (delivered to the District Office) is Friday, Oct. 19, 2018, by 4 p.m.

The Board, on a scheduled basis, will interview applicants on Tuesday, Oct. 23, 2018, in the Castaic Union School District Office Board Room, scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
