SACRAMENTO – California Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron (R-Escondido) issued the following statement Wednesday responding to President Trump’s threat to cut off Federal Emergency Management Agency relief funding for Californians impacted by the worst wildfire season in state history:
“The state and federal governments have an obligation to help survivors as they recover from a disaster. Anything less than our total support is inappropriate and unhelpful. Californians in fire areas have lost everything. They should not be victimized again because of a political squabble.
“Last year, California crafted a bipartisan plan to ease regulations and encourage cooperation between state and private landowners to restore our overgrown forests. The federal government needs to join us as an equal partner in the push for better for management of federally owned wildlands, which make us 60 percent of California’s forests.
“The Camp Fire, which likely started in Plumas National Forest and burned state, federal and private land, highlights the need for even more cooperation in the fight to prevent and recover from wildfires.
“Federal firefighting resources play a vital role when a fire breaks out and federal relief agencies have been reliable partners in the recovery process. I hope that all levels of government can continue working together to care for survivors and protect lives and property.”
ldron, R-Escondido, represents California’s 75th Assembly District, which includes the communities of Bonsall, Escondido, Fallbrook, Hidden Meadows, Rainbow, San Marcos, Temecula, Valley Center and Vista.
