CULVER CITY — College of the Canyons has run its current win streak to five games after returning home from Monday’s game at West L.A. College armed with a 2-0 non-conference victory.
COC starter Brendan Henry (4-4) was brilliant in pitching the full nine innings. He limited the Wildcats to just four hits while striking out five batters with no walks. Henry has now tossed three complete games this season and owns a 3.24 ERA across 75 innings of work.
Canyons got on the board with an unearned run in the sixth inning on Tyler Grodell’s RBI double that brought home Felix Brandt.
Max Mehlbaum came up with another big hit in the seventh when his RBI triple scored Kyle Soberano and put the game at 2-0 for the Cougars.
That would prove to be all the offense Canyons needed in a game that lasted just one hour and 45 minutes.
Mehlbaum finished the game 3-for-4 to lead the Cougars. Soberano and Tyler Erne both recorded doubles in the game.
West L.A. (10-21, 5-13) starter Eli Saucedo pitched well but took the loss. Saucedo (1-5) allowed just one earned run on eight hits and no walks.
Canyons (19-5, 11-7) currently sits in second place in the Western State Conference (WSC) East Division standings.
The Cougars now head north to play in the annual Allan Hancock College Spring Tourney April 17-18.
COC faces Merced College at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, then squares off vs. Cypress College at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Canyons returns to conference action with a three-game set vs. Barstow College beginning April 23 on the road.
