NORTHRIDGE – With the programs’ most qualifiers since 2017, the CSUN men’s and women’s track and field teams are getting ready to compete in the 2019 NCAA Division I West Regional this weekend at Sacramento State.

Men:
Bashiru Abdullahi – At the Big West Championships. Abdullahi, a freshman won the Big West 110m hurdles in a time of :13.80. His performance was the second-fastest in school history behind Thomas Ross who ran :13.65 in 2008. Abdullahi’s mark is tied for the 12th fastest in the West this season.

Antonio Garcia – Garcia, a senior, qualified for the 110m hurdles by going :14:08 during Pacific Coast Intercollegiate. His time is 32nd among the 48 qualifiers for the event. The 110m hurdles begin Friday at 5 p.m. with the first round of races. Saturday’s quarterfinals are set for 7:20 p.m.

Ahmed Mohamed – The sophomore took home top honors in the triple jump during the Big West Championships. His leap of 50-8 edged second-place Drew Xandrine-Anderson of UC Davis by 2.5 inches. He is currently 20th in the Region and the 18th seed this weekend.

Matthew Arnold – The junior qualified for the triple jump as well, he is ranked 49th after his jump at 49-4 1/4 at the Stanford Invitational (Mar. 29) was good enough to qualify for regionals.

Mathiew Tshani – After his performance at the Big West Championships where he went a personal best 49-3 1/2 Tshani became the third Matador to earn a spot in the triple jump at the regional meet. The men’s triple jump is scheduled for Saturday night at 6:30 p.m.

Clint Meyer – Meyer, a junior defended his shot put title at the Big West Championships as he secured first place as he broke the 40-year old school record in the process with a distance of 63-2 1/4. He is ranked 14th in the West Region heading into the weekend. The shot put is set for Saturday at 2:45 p.m.

Armon Hunter – The senior is ranked 25th in the discus after recording a toss of 183-3 at the Triton Invitational. Hunter’s entry in the discus is to begin on Friday at 4 p.m.

Erick Loomis – Loomis is the highest ranked CSUN men’s competitor coming into the regional meet. Loomis is fifth in the hammer throw. He reset his own school record in the event with a toss of 224-6 at the USC Invite in March. Loomis repeated as Big West champion in the hammer earlier this month. The hammer throw will begin on Thursday at 12 p.m.

Women:
Immanuela Aliu – The freshman has qualified for both the 100m and 200m as she is ranked 32nd in the 100m with a time of :11.50 and 38th in the 200m with a time of :23.44 both achieved during the Desert Heat Classic on April 27. The first round of the 100m is scheduled for Thursday at 6:30 p.m. with the quarterfinals coming on Friday at 6 p.m. The first round of the 200m will begin on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Quarterfinal action for the 200m is set for Saturday at 7:35 p.m.

Lena Kandissounon – The freshman set a personal best and secured a second-place finish at the Big West Championships with a time of :53.87 in the 400m. It is the eighth quickest time in school history as she is ranked 44th in the region. The first round of the 400m will get underway Thursday at 7:20 p.m. with the quarterfinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Sydney Mosley – The junior qualified in the 100m hurdles with a school record time of :13.19 that was recorded during the Big West Championships. Her time is the 20th quickest in the West Region. The first round of the 100m hurdles will begin Friday at 4:30 p.m. Quarterfinal races will begin Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

De’Andreah Young – Young, who won the 400m Hurdles at the Big West Championships, her time of :57.76 which was recorded during the prelims of the Big West Championships is the eighth fastest in the West this season. The first round of the 400m hurdles will be run Thursday at 4:30 p.m. and will be followed by the quarterfinals on Friday at 7 p.m.

Ty Wallace – Wallace earned runner-up honors at the Big West Championships in the triple jump with a leap of 40-11 1/2. The mark is the 10th best in school history and is the 48th best in the West Region. The women’s triple jump goes off on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Brandy Williams- Williams won the shot put at the Big West Championships with a toss of 54-3 3/4. It was a personal best for Williams and was the second-best mark in school history. She is 11th in the West this season. The women’s shot put begins Saturday at 5:30 p.m.

Stella Weinberg – The freshman shattered the Big West Conference record in the javelin by winning the competition with a mark of 177-10. She also broke the CSUN record earlier this year with a distance of 178-8 at the Stanford Invitational on Mar. 29. Weinberg has the top CSUN women’s seed coming into the West Regional. She is ranked sixth in the javelin which will get going on Thursday at 12 p.m.

“Everybody that we’re taking has a just as good an opportunity as anyone to make it to the championship. Our expectation is to go out and compete at the same level we have been competing at all year. For a number of out athletes, this is her first real big championship. We just have to focus on the things that we have done to get us here. We need to take our time, stay within ourselves, and try not to be somebody that we’re not.
