1916 - Woodrow Wilson signs act creating National Park Service; its first director is Stephen T. Mather, who made his fortune with the Santa Clarita Valley's borax mine and envisioned & put his own money into forming the Park Service [story]

Safety TownNow in its fifth year, the Santa Clarita Optimist Foundation is proud to offer two Safety Town camps, held at West Creek Academy in Santa Clarita on July 15 – 19 and July 22 – 26 from 9:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Teachers and trained youth volunteers will teach over 100 children how to safely cross the street and obey traffic signals while walking and while driving miniature cars, complete with safety belts. Children practice in a child-size city, complete with buildings, streets, sidewalks, a traffic signal, and street signs.

Community safety professionals visit daily and give demonstrations; they represent the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s Departments, American Red Cross, City Transit, crossing guards, lifeguards and more. The camp covers fire safety, dialing 9-1-1, earthquake and disaster safety, personal safety and stranger danger, and water, vehicle, passenger, playground, bicycle safety, internet safety and medicine/drug safety. Safety-themed craft projects, songs, games, and role-playing reinforce the safe conduct rules the children learned.

An innovative and interactive Parent and Grandparent Safety Town Program will bring in experts in Cybersecurity/Internet Safety, Bullying and Child Abuse Prevention, and Disaster Preparedness for families, to share strategies that all caregivers of children (pre-K – grade 6) in SCV can use to keep them safe. Dinner will be served, and the book — Doing Right by Our Kids: Protecting Child Safety at All Levels will be given in a bag with safety information and materials.

Enroll by June 30, for the Early Bird special of $25. A 20% military discount will be given to children whose parents are on current and active duty.

We thank our Premier Donors — the Valencia Auto Center, A Royal Suite Home Furnishings and Bank of the Sierra. Go to safetytownscv.com for more information about our program.
