Washington, DC – Congresswoman Katie Hill (D-Agua Dulce) on Thursday led an amendment which increases funding for crucial wildfire prevention and response efforts to H.R. 3055.
Amendment #187 provides an additional $7 million for the Department of Interior and Forest Service wildfire-related accounts. The amendment was agreed to with overwhelming bipartisan support and passed the House with a 377-55 vote.
“2018 was the deadliest fire season in California’s history,” Hill said. “According to Cal Fire and the National Interagency Fire Center, 8,527 fires burned a total of 1,893,913 acres — the largest area on record. The fires have destroyed communities and impacted our air quality and wildlife. They hurt our local economy and have killed dozens of people across the state… We have to do more.”
As amended, H.R. 3055:
* Increases by $7 million Department of Interior and Forest Service accounts for wildfire preparedness, wildfire suppression operations, emergency rehabilitation, and hazardous fuels management.
* Allocates $2.25 billion in fire cap adjusted funds.
“When it comes to wildfires, you cannot simply treat the effect. You have to treat the cause, but prevention takes funding. That’s why this bill and this amendment are so important,” Hill said.
H.R. 3055 is expected to pass the House of Representatives the week of June 24.
