LANCASTER – A wild seventh inning wound up deciding things on Tuesday night at The Hangar, as the JetHawks fell, 7-6, to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes.
Seven combined runs were scored in the inning, with Rancho Cucamonga’s four edging Lancaster’s three.
Tuesday’s game was tied, 3-3, heading into the seventh inning. Rancho Cucamonga (23-16, 64-43) scored four times on five hits in the inning against Salvador Justo (3-2). Donovan Casey untied the game with a two-run homer, and Miguel Vargas added his first Cal League home run as well.
Lancaster (21-18, 55-52) answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Matt Hearn (pictured above), who had three hits, drove in a run with a single and Ryan Vilade followed that with a sacrifice fly. Another run scored on a balk, but the JetHawks left two men on base in the inning.
The JetHawks could not complete the comeback, as Rancho’s Brett de Geus pitched two scoreless innings to earn the save. Starter Andre Jackson (3-1) pitched into the seventh inning to pick up the win.
Rancho took an early lead thanks to the long ball. Steve Berman homered in the second inning, and Deacon Liput added a two-run shot in the third. Pitcher Garrett Schilling would only allow those three runs in six innings, giving him 10 quality starts this season.
Lancaster tied the game with three runs in the third inning on four hits. The game would remain knotted up until the seventh inning.
Here’s the game’s box score.
The three-game series continues Wednesday night. Lefty Ryan Rolison (4-6) gets the start versus fellow southpaw Leo Crawford (5-4). First pitch at The Hangar is 6:35 pm.
