School districts throughout the state are releasing their 2019 California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) scores. For the Saugus Union School District (SUSD), it was another year of steady increases in both English Language Arts and Mathematics.
“We are glad to see that our scores are continuing to rise as we implement new curriculum, new programs, and new processes throughout our district,” said Dr. Colleen Hawkins, Superintendent of the Saugus Union School District. In SUSD, 66.34% of students in grades 3-6 met or exceed grade level standards in English Language Arts. In mathematics for grades 3-6, SUSD also shows an increase to 56% overall meeting or exceeding standards.
“Our continued positive increases, in Language Arts and mathematics, are a direct result of the instructional work done by our teachers and administrators at each of our 15 elementary school sites,” said Dr. Hawkins.
“We are pleased to see continued growth and look forward to seeing our curriculum and instructional changes implemented this year translate to even higher student achievement in the future.” said Julie Olsen, Saugus Union School Board President.
The Saugus Union School District is making several curriculum changes by implementing common pacing/curriculum guides for all grade levels, implementing periodic benchmark assessments for all grade levels, and providing content area (ELA, math, and science) coaching support. Together with curriculum leaders, grade level teachers are working to design quality rigorous lessons and assessments that are aligned to the state standards and prepare students to demonstrate their learning on these high stakes tests. “WE are on a journey, together, to improve student achievement. WE are doing well, but WE are striving to achieve more,” said Dr. Hawkins.
