From Tuesday through Thursday evening, the National Weather Service is predicting an extreme wind event with gusts up to 60 miles per hour in some areas of Los Angeles County.

The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures can lead to an increased risk of wildfire. The Los Angeles County Fire Department has pre-positioned additional firefighters and equipment in areas identified as having elevated risk.

Here are some safety tips on how you can prepare your family and home for severe wind events:

Check for Potential Wind-Borne Objects: Anything can become a flying hazard in high-wind conditions and even strike power lines. Store canopies, trampolines, garbage cans, grills, patio furniture and other objects (e.g., tools, toys, bicycles, etc.) inside your garage or home.

Inspect Trees: Loose or fallen tree branches can cause damage. If possible, make sure to clear them to prevent harm.

Prevention Is Key: Human activity causes 90% of wildfires. Remember to properly dispose of cigarettes and avoid activities that create sparks or include open flames.

Be Prepared for Emergency: In case of a wildfire sparked by high winds, you may need to enact your emergency plan and have your supply kit handy in case you evacuate. Visit fire.lacounty.gov/rsg for information on how to create your Ready! Set! Go! Wildfire Action Plan and how to assemble your supply kit.

The Office of Emergency Management in Los Angeles County is on high alert in anticipation of strong Santa Ana winds that will impact the County from tonight until Thursday evening.

The National Weather Service is predicting extreme winds with peak gusts possibly up to 80 miles per hour in some isolated Los Angeles County mountainous communities. As a result, power outages and heightened fire conditions can strike any community at any time of day or night.

“The emergency management community in LA County, at large, is on high alert tonight,” stated Kevin McGowan, Director of LA County’s Office of Emergency Management. “Our emergency response officials are world-class and have pre-positioned their personnel and resources in strategic areas to defend lives and property. But, we need collaboration from all residents who live in LA County to stay safe as a region. We must all do our part by staying informed and being ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice.”

The following safety tips can help County residents prepare themselves, their families and homes for power outages and evacuations:

Ready your Home: Create and maintain defensible space and harden your home against flying embers. Clear wood, furniture, and other combustibles at least 20 feet away from structures on your property.

Be Evacuation Ready: Prepare your family and home ahead of time for the possibility of having to evacuate. Park your vehicle facing the street so that you do not have to back out, and in the driveway (to avoid being stuck behind an electricity-operated garage door).

Plan Ahead: Keep your mobile phone and other devices charged with the ringer on so you can receive and hear emergency alerts throughout the night.

Stay Informed: Sign up for emergency notification systems available in your community. Identify which system is used by your local law enforcement agency for your neighborhood, at your workplace, school and other places that you or family members frequent. Watch local newscasts and have a battery-operated radio handy so that you can access news if the power goes out.
