1891 - Reverend F.D. Seward opens the new First Presbyterian Church in Newhall [story]

Following its run to a Western State Conference-South Division title, the College of the Canyons women’s basketball team had three of its players – sophomore forward Angelica Sahagun, sophomore forward Jazzmyn Davis and freshman guard Amanda Ajdari –  earn First-Team All-Conference honors.

Sahagun, an Alemany High School alum, led the WSC in scoring with 18.8 ppg and was ranked10th in the state in scoring. The sophomore also notched 10 double-doubles over the course of the Cougars’ 30-game schedule.

“Sahagun is probably the best all-around offensive player in the WSC,” head coach Greg Herrick said. “She can score so many different ways, and she put tremendous pressure on defenses to stop her.”

Davis, a two-time all-conference honoree, earned her second consecutive selection. The sophomore led the team in rebounding with 11.2 rpg and turned in 14.6 ppg, good for sixth best in the WSC, South Division.

“Davis was very consistent throughout her career at COC,” Herrick said. “Her athletic ability was evident by her averaging a double-double in conference play. Jazzmyn always defended the opposition’s best inside player and usually neutralized that player’s impact in the game.”

As the only COC freshman to be named to the all-conference team, Ajdari led the conference in assists, dishing out 8.1 apg. The Hart High School alum was second in the conference in free throw percentage, making 144 of her 175 buckets to shoot 82.3 percent from the line.

“Ajdari is probably the most improved player in the conference,” Herrick said. “Her ability to control the pace of the game from the point guard position was vital down the stretch.”

College of the Canyons won the program’s 14th conference title in 2012 and finished the year with a 19-11 overall record and 9-3 conference mark.
