DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – In its first appearance at the NAIA National Championships since 2012, The Master’s College golf team finished 15th out of a field of 29 competitors after carding a final score of 45-over 1197 (295-306-298-298) in the 64th-annual event.
TMC was the lone representative from the Unaffiliated – Cal Pac/Golden State group.
Coastal Georgia took home its second consecutive national title after notching a team score of 3-over-par 291 to finish the 72-hole event at 7-under.
“Our goal was to not to finish 15th at the national championship, it was to prepare to win it,” assessed TMC golf head coach Jason Semelsberger. “Having said that, I thought the guys competed this week with maturity. With the exception of the second round where we let things get away from us a little bit, I thought we played solidly throughout the entire event, especially for such a young team.”
Highlighting the Mustangs’ play was freshman Samuel Eisenhuth (Embarrass, MN) whose consistent play resulted in a final score of 6-over 294. Notably, it was Eisenhuth’s third round score of 2-under 70 on Thursday that gave TMC the green light to advance to Friday’s fourth round final group of 17.
Finishing just a stroke behind was Joseph Downey (Santa Clarita, CA) who carded a 7-over 295. At the end of the second round, Downey was the first Mustang to make par. Eisenhuth went on to make par in the final round.
Elsewhere, consistent play came from Josh Delo (Mesa, AZ) resulting in a final score of 303, while Hayden Nicholaides (Englewood, CO) carded a final score of 322.
Finally, Josh Gardella (Littleton, CO) got the Mustangs off to a strong start after shooting 1-over 73 in the first round.
“We grew over the course of the week in terms of playing the game relaxed, level, and focused when the pressure was at the highest level,” further stated Semelsberger, “God provided many life lessons for us all to continue to shape us and hopefully make us more like Christ. I’m grateful to Him for a great week and a great experience for the team.”
Now, at the end of the season, the young Mustangs return to Santa Clarita with the hopes of returning to the NAIA postseason next year.
