Editor’s Note: On Friday, Dec. 28, 2018, a Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded the salesman $750,000, finding that the off-duty officer was wrong to have pointed a gun at him and detained him.

KHTS has updated its original story with the details.

Original story, Jan. 3, 2015
An allegedly aggressive door-to-door salesman was arrested Friday after Santa Clarita deputies responded to a burglary call at an off-duty officer’s home.

Omar Segura, 33, of Van Nuys, was arrested at a home on Woodstone Place in Saugus, officials said.

The suspect was attempting to sell the victim, an off duty law enforcement officer, a home-alarm system, officials said.

Segura allegedly became aggressive and tried to push his way into the officer’s home.

The homeowner detained Segura at gunpoint while Sheriff’s Station officials arrived to investigate and arrested Segura on a burglary charge.

He was booked at the Sheriff’s Station at 7:18 p.m. He’s being held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and due in court Monday, according to Sheriff’s Department arrest records.

He’s being held in lieu of $50,000 bail.

It’s what we all wish we could do with a “foot in the door” salesman but can only get away with if you’re a cop.

    • nate says:

The officer is LYING. He did not do any of what the officer is saying. He was not a “foot in the door’ salesman at all. What you REALLY have on your hands is a low life crooked cop as a neighbor.

  2. This is B/S! HE IS NOT AGGRESSIVE! HE IS A GOOD MAN!

The arrest is ridiculous! If the home didn’t belong to a cop, the salesman wouldn’t be arrested. Shame.

You’re right, if it belonged to me he would have been shot until either a: the mag was empty or b: he hit the ground. Be grateful he entered the home of a cop illegally and not someone else who may have been more willing to enforce the castle doctrine

  15. And not that I need to explain myself to anyone, but for the record I fully support law enforcement and respect what they do. I can’t wait to speak to Omar when he is released. He is not a criminal. He makes an honest living and is a man of God, I respect that too!

  17. Its not his exact address.

  18. Wtf. Omar is FAR from being aggressive. He’s one of the most humble kind hearted people I know.

  19. Abuso de autoridad?

I don’t see an Address. I see an address block, how most crimes are reported.

  21. Also, have not been convicted of ANY crime, why is his name being blasted.

  22. What does the home of a cop have to do with this anyways???

  23. Yikes! Why open the door!!!!

  24. Good job!!! These people need to learn NO!!! If nobody answered the door maybe they would all stop!

    • My friend pretended that no one was home and they used that as a sign that it was ok to burglarize her home. I say no thanks and that should be enough?

    • Lora Hill Lora Hill says:

These people going door to door in the past few months have been complete pests, looking in windows and pounding on doors till someone opens.

    • Some of these people are trying to make an honest living but there are too many that are not and how do we determine that?!!

    • Jason Fumarolo thats a good point. You’re right, there are some of those people trying to make an honest living and I know lately there has been a lot of burglaries with people knocking door to door (i had someone knock on my door recently and said no and shut the door on them) that give the honest ones a bad rep. Its sad. My family and friends are in law enforcement and I have a high respect for them. Always have, always will. This story just caught me off guard are shocked me since Ive worked and kept Omar as a friend over 7 years,. Hope all clears up in the end

    • Andrea Galindo lol- dont wake up the trick during a nap. Thats just asking to get beat ! LOL!!! Jason Fumarolo hello :) … as for this whole story today- 2 sides to a story. if no means no, then by all means, thats your queue to leave.. if you choose to stay and push it, then thats opening a can of worms. Im sure the officer was protecting his home just like any one would protect their home…

    • Bad behavior is going to cause an arrest!! and that is a good thing!

  25. Honest, good hearted man of god or burglar scouting my family’s home pushes his way into my house would meet the same response! That man (cop) was defending his family and his home. He’s lucky it was an officer who acted with restraint!

  26. I have had this happen when my children were home. The salesman was talking and I turned my head to my kids and he was in my house! I dont care if you are the greatest man on earth, you should never go into someones house without being invited. This has been going on for a while. Its only blasted on social media because it was a cops house. Shameful….however, these “salesman” should br trained better.

  27. Why is he out knocking on doors after dark. Someone knocked on my 79 year old Mom’s dark porch door at 8:00 pm “selling alarms” last week. She did not open the door, but instead did the safe thing and called the police to report a suspicious character.

  28. The definition is if someone enters to commit theft or any other felony it’s burglary. So I’m guessing there was something going on to match the above.

    • Samantha says:

it’s illegal to enter someone’s home forcefully. Just saying even stepping inside after being told no.

  29. Obviously there is going to be favor for any cop/sheriff. Too much power and ego they know they have. So Hey, I don’t want to be bothered with your sales pitch and I know I can get you arrested. This is nonsense! Cops/Sheriffs also need to be offered anger management and emotional stress support through the department and maybe a lot of less nonsense will rise.

  33. The salesman is probably on commission LOL!! maybe he was inside the house, that can be a burglary charge, especially refusing to Leave ….he needs a real job, regular salary and all that aggressive might go away. Idiot im glad he was arrested

  35. I used to be a door to door salesperson but never pushy and some people would be so rude and even want to send thier dogs after me , when someone was not interested id walk away and thank them for thier time , we were told to never be forcefull , annoying or insulting nor accept to go inside unless invited and we felt safe to do so , theres more to bieng a door to door salesperson than people think ,

  37. Really Mary lol? What is it you find funny? That someone is in a jam right now? Do these things really amuse you? And I’m most sure you have a million dollor annual salary, right? Because you have a “real job” (just over broke) find mercy and grace ♡

  38. Della that’s how a salesman should be like you were. …obviously the one arrested needs further training and people skills..

  39. I’m not amused and if he chose that job good for him, he can’t expect people to buy his product with what was said above, I have a great career with LA County Sheriffs, not a million dollar salary but a great place to be, and a steady career for the last 39 years.

  40. I thought door to door sales people are not allow to knock at people’s doors after 5pm

  41. I thought door to door sales people are not allow to knock at people’s doors after 5pm

  42. What about the words “no”, “I’m not interested”, and “no thank you” means “Sure! Come right on in!”?

Seriously. If you look at it either way (he was over-eager for a sale or attempted burglarizing), it’s inappropriate!

No means no. And if you decide to enter my house without permission, you get the consequences.

  46. Rob G says:

Interesting. When three young men stormed into my neighbor’s garage and he pulled a gun to protect himself, the SCV Sheriff arrested my friend for banishing a fire arm and let the three young men go. What a joke

  47. I bet he was a Primerica rep too

  48. I bet he was a Primerica rep too

  49. I don’t think anybody is bagging on the type of work he does a door to door salesman, apparently according to the post he
became aggressive trying to push his sale, and thats when it becomes a problem, or if he got in to the residence and wouldnt leave, who knows only the two people that were there really know the truth. Maybe the article was written not because the victim was a cop, could have just been a slow day to write an article, besides the media loves to write things about cops and get a reaction from the public. Bottom line if they felt he crossed the line and then he should have been arrested then he will have his day in court if charges are pressed. I havent had a door to door salesman knock on my door in years, I really didn’t know they existed because its so easy to purchase things through other sources now and days….they seem like a thing of the past. Good luck to them both.

  50. Patty Ann Patty Ann says:

I had an ADT person come to my door at 8:00pm the other night. I have a security screen door that is locked and I will not open it. He was pushy and I just closed the door.

  51. Patty Ann Patty Ann says:

No means No. I have a do not solicit sign in my window and they still knock on the door. If I want something I go out and buy it. I do not buy anything from a person who came to my front door uninvited.

  52. People needs to respect the No Soliciting sign. No one is interested in buying from a door to door salesman. The Supreme Courts are nothing but idiots saying that people are missing out in what they have to offer. I mean how would those jack asses in the supreme court like it if a door to door salesman comes to their homes at 8pm knocking or show up in the middle of dinner. There needs to be a law for door to door sales people. Home owners are with in their rights to to put up signs of do not enter or no soliciting because they dont want to be bothered. I understand they have to make a living but by being pushy isn’t going to help just to make commission because their jobs are on the line.

  53. Donna says:

VERY irresponsible to post the Officers hone address!!! This is wrong on so many levels.

    • Donna says:

very irresponsible to report the officers Street.that is so wrong on so many levels, you should be ashamed!

  54. Ana El Beleidy says:

I have known Omar Segura for 8 years. Never in those 8 years have I seen him act “aggressive”. He is a man trying to make a living, planning on proposing to his girlfriend, and a guy so involved in his fath, he has received his Ministry in a Christian church. The cop guy probably got annoyed at him for knocking on his door, and ONCE AGAIN police abusing their power got him into all these RIDICULOUS charges! Burglary? Don’t you have to STEAL something in order to qualify for this term? What happened to “Trespassing”? $50,000 bail??? I am IN AWE on how far these people abuse their power, just because a guy knocked in his door to try and sell his product. What a SHAME this “justice system” bring us.

  55. Tracy says:

    Don’t open the door

  56. Lisa Padilla Lisa Padilla says:

I believe that there is always three sides to every story , yours, mine and then the TRUTH. There is to many missing facts here . Really makes you wonder who is the real criminal .

  57. Sue Dewinter Sue Dewinter says:

Once told the homeowner was not interested, the salesman should have left. If I felt threatened, I would have done the same thing. No means no.

  58. Hmmm another angry cop story? Saugus is the new Ferguson

  59. Andrea mendoza says:

This is ridiculous! Yet another case of racism!!!! Omar is nothing near what these officers are trying to portray him as. How do you not even question the once being accused? There are always two sides to every story. But yet you just ask for the one sided story and believe it? Crooked a*$ cops. The real truth will come out. I really hope some neighbors got this whole thing on surveillance camera so Omar’s side can be seen and prove his innocence!
