[Supv. Antonovich] – An audit ordered by the Board of Supervisors, on a motion by L.A. County Mayor Michael D. Antonovich, of the L.A. Care Health Plan revealed that the agency charged with providing health coverage to Los Angeles County’s poorest residents, spent freely on extravagant meals and entertainment over the last 16 months.
Mayor Antonovich, who was appointed to the L.A. Care Board in December, called for the review due to concern about lax oversight of the agency by both its former CEO and Board of Governors that administers more than $4 billion in public funds. “The current officers of the governing board of L.A. Care and its former CEO were well aware of this out-of-control spending” Antonovich said. “This fiscal irresponsibility was uncovered by media reports in October 2013 and they did nothing to correct it.” At that time, it was determined that L.A. Care had spent lavishly on food and liquor at upscale restaurants and hotels.
L.A. Care was created to manage health care and federal and state Medi-Cal funding for health care coverage for more than one million Los Angeles County residents. “The continued arrogance to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on expensive meals and liquor while patients needing care wait in long lines for service is unconscionable,” he added. “L.A. Care was created to make health care accessible to our county’s most vulnerable populations — not to be a personal credit card for the entertainment of its CEO and Governing Board.”
“That the previous governing board of L.A. Care did not take definitive steps to end these practices when this report was aired, shows contempt for the public and a failure in its fiduciary responsibility,” said Antonovich. “I will bring a motion before the LA Care Board to direct executive management to implement policies to eliminate the use of funds for these frivolous and lavish expenditures.” The Audit will be discussed at the Board of Supervisor’s meeting on March 17th.

This is why we have audits! People can’t always be trusted.

Why does this article not say anything about these people being relieved of their duties??? They should definitely lose their positions and be required to repay these misappropriated funds!!!
I agree and i believe he will try to do so at their next meeting on the 17th of March
No surprise here!!!
I DOUBT he’ll take Action, but I’m glad he’s
aware and protesting and not joining the parties.
The action is on the supervisors’ agenda tomorrow.
