The College of the Canyons men’s and women’s cross country teams will see their first action of the 2017 season when the Cougars compete in the annual Oxnard Invitational hosted by Oxnard College on Friday, August 25.
Canyons brings a roster of six runners on the men’ side including returning sophomores Jacob Crosson, Garrett Noltemeyer and Cody Roelofson.
In 2016, the men’s team ran to a sixth place finish at the Western State Conference Championships before finishing 18th at the California Community College Athletic Association SoCal Championships. That result earned COC the final qualifying spot for the state championships. Canyons then placed 21st at the state meet.
The COC women’s team will be led by sophomores Díani Ellis, Stephanie Martinez and Celine Whitman who each gained tremendous experience during their last year’s campaign. Ellis finished 24th at the 2016 championship meet in helping the Cougars take sixth place at the event. Canyons also placed second in the WSC and seventh at the SoCal Championships.
This season, COC will most a pair of meets highlighted by the 2017 SoCal Championships on Friday, Nov. 3. Prior to that, the Cougars will also play host for the Southern California Preview meet on Friday, Sept. 15. Both meets will be held at Central Park.
