1872 - Mitchell adobe home in Soledad Canyon area first used as schoolhouse; genesis of 1879 Sulphur Springs School District [story]

Hungry spectators who flocked to the Westfield Valencia Town Center mall’s food court after Sunday morning’s Santa Clarita Marathon were inconvenienced by a Starbucks patron who apparently didn’t know how to use a trash can.

Members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad responded to the mall after a “suspicious package” was reported at about 9:45 a.m.

The “package” was a Starbucks coffee cup. Arson and explosives deputies X-rayed it and determined that’s all it was – an innocuous coffee cup.

SCV Sheriff’s Sgt. Rich Nagler said it was the location of the cup that prompted concern. It had been left on a loading dock behind the food court.

The area outside of the food court was cordoned off until about 11:15 a.m. and the mall was not closed, Nagler said. The Marathon was not disrupted.
