A 32.8-acre brush fire near Copper Hill early Friday is now 85 percent contained.

Crews will be mopping hot spots through the night for the fire which is believed to have been caused by power lines arching, said Los Angeles County Fire Department officials.

“The Newhall Fire” was reported at 7:12 a.m. at Newhall Ranch Road and Copper Hill Drive in Santa Clarita.

The fire is detached from any structures in the area. It is adjacent to Southern California Edison property in the 25000 block of Rye Canyon Road, according to Fire Department spokeswoman Stephanie English.

“Our main threat is the gas fields right there in that dirt lot next to Wal-Mart,” said Joey Napoli of the Los Angeles County Fire Department, noting there are wires to the east of the fire associated with the Edison property.

“Winds are really high and very dynamic and shifting,” English said.

Brush fire at SR-126 and I-5. No lanes affected at this time, but be aware for detours and smoke, according to an online report from the Sheriff’s Department.

Seventeen L.A. County Fire engines are on scene, in addition to multiple helicopters and two water tankers. Eight to 10 camp crews have also been deployed due to the high winds, according to English.

Deputies were not conducting any mandatory evacuations in the area as of 8:30 a.m. but the Albert Einstein Academy and L.A. Fitness reportedly voluntarily evacuated around 8:30 a.m., according to witnesses.

Individual businesses and schools may be implementing voluntary evacuations based on their own discretion, according to Sgt. Maurizi of the SCV Sheriff’s Station.

Witnesses have also reported several streets in the area are being blocked off by deputies, so individuals and parents are currently unable to get through to businesses and schools.
