KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Russell Byrd of The Master’s College men’s basketball team scored 14 points to help lead the NAIA Division I All-Stars to a 100-96 win over the NAIA Division II All-Stars, Saturday evening in the 2nd annual NABC-NAIA All-Star Game in Municipal Auditorium. The event was staged in conjunction with the 2015 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship.
Byrd (Santa Clarita, CA) finished the evening by going 4-12 from the field, 3-8 from behind the arc, and 3-4 from the charity stripe. The senior also yanked down seven rebounds and chipped in an assist.
Byrd earned a spot on this year’s NAIA All-Star roster after transferring to TMC from Michigan State for his senior year. Byrd led the GSAC in scoring, averaging 19.6ppg and tallying in double figures 25 times en route to all-conference honors.
Showing his durability, Byrd averaged a GSAC-high 34.5 minutes per game and pulled down 8.3rpg, paving the way for nine double-doubles. He also dished out 3.6apg and converted 74.8% of his free throw attempts.
The NABC-NAIA Men’s Basketball All-Star Committee determined the selection criteria and oversaw the selection process. The All-Stars were seniors in eligibility status and were open for submission by head coaches in 101 Division I schools and 133 Division II schools. Selection criteria took into account season statistics, awards and a champions-of-character aspect. The Committee is comprised of coaches from both Division I and Division II ranks.
