The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced the Golden Globe nominees for its film and television awards at a ceremony in Beverly Hills early Thursday morning. Several CalArtians were recognized for their work in animation, with three of the five nominees in the Best Animated Feature category helmed by School of Film/Video alumni.

* “Big Hero 6,” from Walt Disney Animation Studios, is an action-adventure that focuses on a special bond between a big, inflatable robot and a child prodigy who organizes a band of high-tech heroes to solve a mystery in San Fransokyo. It was directed by Chris Williams and alumnus Don Hall (Film/Video 95), who also directed 2011’s Winnie the Pooh.

* 20th Century Fox Animation’s “The Book of Life,” directed by Jorge Gutierrez (Film/Video MFA 00), uses Mexico’s Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) as a frame of reference when it follows a group of three friends on their travels.

* “The Boxtrolls” from Laika Studios is directed by CalArts alum Anthony Stacchi (Film/Video BFA 86) and Graham Annable. The film is a stop-motion film that’s adapted from Alan Snow’s 544-page illustrated novel Here Be Monsters!

The two remaining films in the Animated Feature category are The Lego Movie, directed by Chris Miller and Phil Lord, and How to Train Your Dragon 2, directed by Dean DeBlois.

This morning’s nominations come on the heels of last week’s Annie Awards’ announcements, which also honored the aforementioned directors as well as a number of other CalArts alumni.

The Golden Globes will be broadcast on NBC on Jan. 11, 2015.
