Disney/Pixar’s “Coco,” co-written and co-directed by CalArts grad Adrian Molina, won “Best Animated Feature” and 10 more trophies in its sweep of the 45th Annual Annie Awards Saturday night at UCLA’s Royce Hall.
Molina also shared Annies for “Best Writing in an Animated Feature Production” with Matthew Aldrich, “Best Direction in an Animated Feature Production” with Lee Unkrich, and “Best Music in an Animated Feature Production” with Michael Giacchino, Kristin Anderson-Lopez, Robert Lopez and Germaine Franco.
Also scoring Annies for “Coco” Saturday night were Anthony Gonzales (voice acting); Shaun Galinak, Dave Hale, Jason Johnston, Carl Kaphan and Keith Daniel Klohn (animated effects); John Chun Chiu Lee (character animation); Daniel Arriaga, Daniela Strijleva, Greg Dykstra, Alonso Martinez and Zaruhi Galstyan (character design); Harley Jessup, Danielle Feinberg, Bryn Imagire, Nathaniel

McLaughlin and Ernesto Nemesio (production design); Dean Kelly (storyboarding); and Steve Bloom, Lee Unkrich, Greg Snyder and Tim Fox (editorial).
The Annies were established by ASIFA-Hollywood (the L.A. chapter of the International Animated Film Association) in 1972.
In the field of animation, the Annies are the top awards, and earning an Annie is considered even more prestigious than winning an animation Oscar.
So far this award season, Molina has already won the Golden Globe for “Best Animated Feature Film” as “Coco” co-writer and co-director.
Molina also shares an Academy Award nomination for “Best Animated Feature Film” with co-writer-co-director Lee Unkrich. The Oscars winners will be announced Sunday, Mar. 4, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood during the live telecast on ABC starting at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.
