Mariah Castillo’s sensational 16:56 course record, followed by her announcement about verbally committing to Texas Christian University, led the Saugus girls to a record 12th consecutive Foothill League cross country championship at Central Park Thursday afternoon.
Here’s the post by Brandon Jauregui from the Santa Clarita Valley Runners Facebook page:
It was obvious Castillo meant business from the start, as the senior passed the mile marker in a mind-blowing 5:18 split on her way to shaving a remarkable 17 seconds off Samantha Ortega’s course record, set in 2014.
Teammate Jaqueline Cascione stitched together one the greatest performances in Central Park history, clocking 17:33, No. 3 all-time behind Castillo and Ortega, and five seconds ahead of last year’s champion Kaylee Thompson.
In the varsity boys final (no pictures available), Saugus gave West Ranch a run for their money down to the wire, but the Wildcats would not be denied, winning their third straight league crown by four points over the Centurions.
The individual battle was just as intriguing, as the top three took advantage of perfect weather conditions to dip under Ryan Tate’s 2015 course record of 15:04.
West Ranch’s Preston Pope led the onslaught with a new course record of 15:01.35, later announcing his decision to attend to Oklahoma State University next fall, followed by junior teammate Isaiah Seidmann (15:02.10) in second and Canyon junior Ethan Danforth (15:02.90) in third.
