A 32-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison Monday for the killing of his 54-year-old father, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced.
Deputy District Attorney Nathan Bartos said Juan Alexander Mejia of Canyon Country pleaded no contest on April 14 to one count of second-degree murder in case PA076988.
On May 16, 2013, Mejia came home drunk, kicked the garage door open and shot his father, Juan Mejia, once in the head killing him, the prosecutor said. The victim slept inside his garage with the door locked because of previous violent outbursts by his son, according to court testimony.
Mejia admitted pointing the gun at his father but claimed to have fired by accident, the prosecutor added. According to the evidence presented in court, following the shooting the defendant fled the scene and buried the weapon in a riverbed.
The case was investigated by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
