VENTURA — College of the Canyons freshman Brooke Chambers netted a pair of goals to help put the Cougars women’s soccer team past East L.A. College by a 5-1 final score Friday morning.
The match came on day two of the New Balance Community College Showcase hosted by Ventura College.
Canyons (1-1) bounced back nicely from its season-opening loss to Cypress College the day prior by besting an East L.A. squad that did much to hurt its cause.
The Huskies aided Canyons with three own goal scores, the first coming at the 14-minute mark.
Playing with the early lead, Chambers capitalized on her first opportunity with a scoring strike that put COC ahead 2-0 in the 17th minute.
Canyons got another assist from East L.A. on a second own goal in the 34th minute.
With Canyons already well in control, the Huskies ceded yet another own goal in the opening minutes of the second half.
Chambers capped her efforts with another ball to the back of the net in the 53rd minute, helping give COC the win with an eventual 5-1 final score. The freshman from Saugus High School already has three goals through two games.
The Cougars tallied 17 shots in the game and earned four corner kicks. Lesly Cabrera led the way with three shots, while Chambers, Andrea Marruffo and Maggie Maldonado recorded two each.
COC sophomore Jennifer Patino (1-0-0) got the start in goal and recorded two saves to earn the win.
On Thursday, Canyons dropped its season opener 4-1 to Cypress College as part of the showcase event’s opening round of games.
Chambers scored the lone goal for Canyons on an assist from Marruffo in the 29th minute, while Aaliyah Lopez (0-1) took the loss in goal despite recording six saves. Cypress was able to establish a 3-0 in the first 15 minutes to take control of the game and seize an opening day victory.
Here’s the box score.
The Cougars will now have two weeks off before hosting San Bernardino Valley College in the 2019 home opener at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13.
