College of the Canyons’ 2018-19 season was another banner year in the storied history of COC Athletics.

The Cougars’ 17 intercollegiate sports programs combined to notch 127 team victories and four conference championships with football, men’s soccer, women’s golf and men’s golf teams each finishing in the top spot.

The men’s soccer team’s Western State Conference championship was the first in program history. COC football’s conference crown was the program’s 12th overall, and ninth since the college reinstated its football program in 1998. The Lady Cougars’ golf title was the ninth overall, while the men’s golf championship was the 10th straight, and 25th overall.

COC student-athletes also brought home eight individual WSC championships led by Haruka Koda (women’s golf), Anguerrand Voisin (men’s golf), Rowdy Feather (men’s swim & dive/200-yard backstroke), Jordan Palmer (men’s track & field/shot put), Delon Buncio (men’s track & field/javelin), Jacore Johnson (men’s track & field/200m & 400m), and the men’s 4×400 relay team (Johnson, Buncio, Aaron Sooknanan and Gabriel Halakakis).

The college also garnered four conference coach of the year awards with Ted Iacenda (football), Phil Marcellin (men’s soccer) and Gary Peterson (women’s golf & men’s golf).

Six Cougars were named the conference Player of the Year with Tariq Speights (football), Cesar Dominguez (men’s soccer), Koda (women’s golf), Sierra Boyajian (softball), Palmer (men’s track & field) and Nobuhiko Wakaari (men’s golf) taking home top honors.

In all, 14 Cougar programs either qualified for the playoffs or sent individuals to the postseason.

Those postseason berths led to six teams (women’s golf, women’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s swim & dive, men’s track & field, and women’s track & field) either advancing to the state finals, or sending individual student-athletes to the state championship event.

Of those teams, women’s golf and men’s golf both won CCCAA Southern California Regional and CCCAA State Championships. The women’s state title was the program’s third, while the men’s championship was a state-record ninth overall.

Wakaari also won a CCCAA individual state championship for the men’s golf program.

Freshman women’s golfer Jessie Lin and freshman shot-putter Palmer both won CCCAA Southern California Regional Championships in their respective sports.

Canyons student-athletes earned a combined 85 All-Conference selections, 13 All-State selections and 12 All-American designations.

Most importantly, the Cougars produced 21 Academic All-State team honorees and saw a combined 92 student-athletes either graduate or transfer during the previous academic year.
