SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — College of the Canyons quarterback Tony Dawson has signed a National Letter of Intent with Houston Baptist University and will continue his playing career as a Husky in the fall.
Dawson, a two-time Southern California Football Association (SCFA) All-League selection, was the Cougars’ primary starter under center in 2014.
He ended the 2014 campaign 84-for-162 with 1,057 passing yards and a 51.9 percent completion rate, to go along with eight touchdowns and six interceptions. The speedy sophomore also had 122 rush attempts for 537 yards and eight touchdowns, to lead the team in all three categories.
Dawson finished his sophomore season with 1,594 combined yards and 16 total touchdowns for the Cougars.

In his two seasons at COC, Dawson played in 21 total games and threw for a combined 2,287 passing yards and 20 touchdowns. He added another 1,094 career rushing yards and 12 touchdowns on 250 carries.
Dawson was also a member of the college’s 2013 SCFA National Division, Northern Conference championship team under then first-year COC head coach Ted Iacenda.
“Tony Dawson is a tremendous young man whose athletic ability is only surpassed by his character,” said Iacenda. “The Houston Baptist University football program is getting an explosive offensive weapon at the quarterback position.
“I like to use the term ‘lightning in a bottle’ to describe Tony’s playmaking ability,” added Iacenda. “He is truly a great player and I can not wait to watch him in action on Saturdays.”
Houston Baptist University is a Division I program in the NCAA’s Football Championship Subdivision (FBS). The Huskies compete in the Southland Conference.
With Dawson’s signing 14 members of the 2014 COC football team have now committed to continue their playing careers at four-year schools. Of that number, seven will be heading to NCAA Division I programs.
