Monica Friedl (Canyon HS) averaged a team-high 14.3 points and 9.4 rebounds per game to go with 41 blocks on the season.
College of the Canyons freshman forward Monica Friedl has been named a First team All-Western State Conference (WSC) honoree after leading the Cougars in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots during the 2014-15 season. COC sophomore guard Qimmah Russo was named Honorable Mention All-WSC.
Friedl, a Canyon High School graduate, averaged a team-high 14.3 points and 9.4 rebounds per game to go with 41 blocks on the season. Those totals ranked Friedl 12th in the conference in scoring, fifth in rebounding and sixth in blocked shots.
The six-foot-tall freshman started 27 of 29 games for head coach Greg Herrick, and led the team in minutes played at roughly 20 per game.
In COC’s final six games of the season Freidl scored 20 or more points five times. She also averaged 19.6 points per game vs. WSC opponents.
With the benefit of having gained such valuable game experience, the future looks bright for Friedl and the Cougars in 2015-16.
“Monica has a great freshman season. She improved each and every day and was one of the top post players in the conference,” said Herrick. “Her ceiling is limitless and she should be considered as the top returner in the WSC next season.”
Russo ranked second on the team in scoring with 13.1 points per game while also averaging 3.2 assists and 1.8 steals per game — both team highs — across 28 games.
Those numbers ranked her 14th in the conference in scoring and ninth in assists.
The Bishop Alemany grad topped double-digit point totals in 17 games this season, including a 21-point performance in her final game at Canyons.
“Qimmah exceeded all the expectations we set for her,” Herrick said. “Her quickness to the basket presented problems for our opponents all season long and her efforts were consistent every game.”
Herrick and the Cougars concluded the regular season on Feb. 21, with the Cougars (16-13, 6-8) failing to reach the postseason for the first time in 22 seasons.
