During this election season, there have been a number of forums and meetings to meet the candidates and hear their positions on various topics. There is one last forum, with a very specific focus, a focus on the arts. The new City Council Candidates’ forum will give potential council members an opportunity to address a number of issues pertaining specifically to the arts.
“I think it is important to hear a candidate’s position on the arts and arts funding.” , says David Stears, Executive Director of the Santa Clarita Shakespeare Festival, and Arts Alliance Member. “A city’s return on investment from the arts is as much, sometimes more, than many other segments of a local economy.”
Some of the important issues facing our growing arts community include: The City’s role in Funding the Arts; Growth of the Arts Economy; Arts and Entertainment Jobs; Public Art in Santa Clarita; Supporting Local Artists and Local Arts Organization / Policy and Ordinances; Arts Venues and our Community; The Santa Clarita Arts Commission – Continued Development?; Arts and Theatre District, What’s Next?; Santa Clarita’s per capital support of local arts vs. other municipalities’; Arts, Artist, and Art Organization Incubators.
Though this is a forum focused on art issues, this is the last public forum to meet the City Council Candidates. Attend and ask questions, or just come and listen to a candidate’s position on the arts. This forum’s theme is Focus on the Arts. It is presented by the Arts Alliance of Santa Clarita, hosted at California Institute of the Arts, and moderated by ARTS for LA. There will be an informal reception to follow. All 13 City Council candidates have received a personal invitation by email. Thus far only about half the candidates have responded.
