[KHTS] – Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors are being asked to approve funds Tuesday for the William Hart Senior Center and Castaic Lake and the ordinance to ban big rig trucks in Sand Canyon.
Los Angeles County Regional Park And Open Space District For County Specified Project Funds
Officials with the Department of Parks and Recreation have submitted grant applications totaling $1,566,168 for projects in the First, Second, Fourth and Fifth Supervisorial Districts.
Two of which — William Hart Senior Center Rehabilitation and Castaic Lake Restrooms & Service Building Refurbishment — are located in the Santa Clarita Valley.
The William Hart Senior Center, located at 24151 N. Newhall Avenue, and if approved, consists of removing and replacing the roof and replacing a non-functioning air conditioning and heating unit, according to the agenda item. The project is expected to cost $100,000.
The second proposed project includes refurbishing the roofs of restrooms and a service building located at Castaic Lake, according to the agenda item. This project is expected to cost $121,600.
Ordinance To Amend Los Angeles County Code For Big Rigs In Sand Canyon
County officials are expected to approve an ordinance that amends Title 15 of the Vehicles and Traffic of the Los Angeles County Code, by adding Section 15.48.016, according to the agenda item. This will prohibit the operation of commercial vehicles with three or more axles or weighing a total of 9,000 pounds or more to use Sand Canyon Road between Sierra Highway and the city of Santa Clarita boundary.
County officials Tuesday approved a ban on big rig trucks and other large vehicles on Sand Canyon Road.
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to ban tractor-trailers and other large trucks on Sand Canyon Road from Highway 14 on the south to Sierra Highway to the north.
“By limiting traffic to passenger vehicles this will help improve traffic safety and enhance traffic flow through the narrow and winding road,” said Supervisor Michael Antonovich.
The motion was brought forth by Antonovich and approved unanimously.
The restriction applies to vehicles with three or more axles, or gross tonnage in excess of 9,000 pounds, according to a statement from Antonovich’s office.
The supervisors previously instructed the Department of Public Works to work with the city of Santa Clarita, the California Highway Patrol and the Sheriff’s Department to provide alternatives, which resulted in the proposed weight and size limit.
Exceptions would include government vehicles, and motion picture vehicles involved in film production.
