The Saugus Union School District issued the following statement Tuesday:
The Saugus Union School District received notification on Monday, June 23, 2014 that a default judgment was signed and issued by the Superior Court of the State of California, and the quo warranto procedure against Stephen Winkler has concluded in favor of the Saugus Union School District.
Winkler is escorted from the dais after the board voted to vacate his seat on grounds he did not maintain a residence in the school district, as state law requires.
Judge Steven J. Kleifield’s judgment stated that Defendant Stephen Winkler “has usurped, intruded into, and unlawfully held and exercised the office of Trustee of the Saugus Union School District, and is not entitled to, and is excluded from the office.”
SUSD Board President Paul De La Cerda commented, “The board is relieved that we are now given the opportunity to fill the vacated board seat. We feel validated that the court upheld our previous actions to remove Stephen Winkler from office.”
The Saugus Board of Trustees followed all required legal rules, protocols, and regulations and now may initiate the process to fill the vacancy.
The Board of Trustees will hold a special meeting on Thursday, June 26, at 7:30 p.m. to consider two options: a provisional appointment process; or a call for a special election to fill the remainder of the term, which lasts through November 2015, for the Saugus Board of Trustee’s vacancy for Stephen Winkler.
