NORTHRIDGE, CA – On the strength of junior Felix Mory’s fourth place finish, the CSUN men’s golf team posted a sixth place team finish Tuesday at the conclusion of the Del Walker Intercollegiate at Virginia C.C. in Long Beach.

At 863, the Matadors missed their second top five finish of the season by just three shots as CSUN tied for sixth with UC Irvine.

“We lost eight shots over the last four holes so we easily could have finished in the top four,” said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. “We’re a little disappointed in how we finished but we put ourselves in a position to finish in the top five so I’m pleased with that.”

Mory, who led the 72-player field after a first round 67, closed with a two-over 72 on Tuesday and wound up fourth at two-under 208. Mory followed up his opening round 67 with a 69 in the second round and posted CSUN’s low 36-hole score of the season at 136. In the final round, he had one par and eight pars on his first nine holes before posting just one par and four bogeys on his final nine holes but still posted his first top 10 finish as a Matador.

“Felix has hit the ball well all season but putted a little more consistently this tournament,” added Bracken. “He was little frustrated in the final round but overall played very well. Even our indies played better today so we’re moving in the right direction.”

Sophomore Joey Varnam positioned himself for his first top 20 finish of the season after sitting in a tie for 24th through two rounds. But a final round two-over 72 wasn’t enough to move Varnam up the leaderboard as he fell into a tie for 27th at seven-over 217. Varnam was three-over after nine holes on Tuesday before closing at one-under.

Tomas Skajem, one of three CSUN individuals, posted his best finish of the season as the freshman finished tied for 39th at 11-over 221. Skajem posted rounds of 72-76 on Monday before closing with a three-over 73 on Tuesday. Tim Snyder and Tavit Garabedian tied for 56th at 15-over 225 after Snyder finished with rounds of 77-75-73 while Garabedian posted scores of 78-73-74.

Also for the Matadors, Luis Calderon (76-76-74) and Sam Engel (72-86-68) tied for 63rd at 16-over 226 and Conrad White tied for 67th at 17-over 227 (77-77-73). Engel’s final round 68 was his low round of the season.

CSUN has a quick turnaround as the Matadors are back on the course in one week at the Sacramento State Invitational at Valley Hi Country Club.
