The CSUN softball team (6-4) defeated Utah State 9-2 Sunday morning in the Matadors’ final game at the DeMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas, NV. Freshman Taylor Troost earned her first career win with a complete-game, 10-strikeout performance while Las Vegas native Savannah Horvath went 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles and a home run as the Matadors defeated the Aggies for the second time in little over a week.
A week ago at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, AZ, the Matadors posted a 3-2 victory over Utah State. Sunday’s game also produced a victory for CSUN, but the result of a much different story. The Matadors posted 10 hits, seven of which went for extra base-hits, including five doubles.
Horvath enjoyed her homecoming, finishing the weekend with a .483 batting average, 10 runs scored, three doubles, a home run, three RBIs, three walks and two stolen bases. She leads CSUN with five doubles this season and has 20 in 68 career games.
Junior Madison Fleming also posted two doubles and added two RBIs in the victory. Katie Hooper had the fifth CSUN double, her third of the weekend and 26th of her career. Hooper also had two RBIs Sunday to raise her career total to 101, making her the eighth player in program history to amass 100 or more RBIs and tying her for seventh in school history with Sandra Michiker.
In the circle, Troost (1-2) tossed seven strong innings, scattering eight hits to go with the 10 punch-outs. In 21.2 innings this year, she has 19 strikeouts to just six walks allowed.
Taylor Glover, who is batting .515 in 10 games this year, kept her hitting streak alive with a single and added a run and an RBI. She now has scored 96 runs in her career, taking sole possession of 10th in program history.
Taylor Nate picked up first triple of the season and an RBI while Mackenzie Babbitt and Aliyah Ricks each had stolen bases.
In the first, Horvath doubled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. After Utah State scored a run to tie the game in the top of teh second, Fleming plated Ariana Wassmer with a two-out double and the third got an RBI double from Hooper and an RBI triple from Nate.
Horvath blasted her second home run of the season and 11th of her career in the fourth. Utah State got a run back in the fifth, but in the sixth CSUN erupted for four runs to put the seal the victory. Fleming had an RBI double and Glover and Hooper both had RBI singles while a fourth run scored as the result of an error.
The Matadors return to action next weekend in Cathedral City, CA as part of the 2016 Cathedral City Classic. At the prestigious event, CSUN will face Oregon, California, San Diego State, Fresno State and Boise State. All five games will be played at Big League Dreams Sports Park.
