Andrew Straughan, the 24-year-old Santa Clarita resident who died in a collision on Bouquet Canyon Road the night of July 4, had a blood alcohol level of .22 at the time of his death, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner-Coroner’s report released Thursday.
At approximately 9:10 p.m. July 4, Straughan was reportedly traveling on Bouquet Canyon Road at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his vehicle and hit a utility pole near Wellston Drive, according to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Straughan was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Based on the blood test results, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has changed the cause of the collision to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Deputies responded to the collision at 9:25 p.m. that evening, and found one man dead and three people injured.
“The driver was changing lanes, when his vehicle struck another vehicle,” Sgt. Scott Shoemaker of the SCV Sheriff’s Station told SCV News July 5. “The driver then lost control of his car and slid up onto the northbound sidewalk of Bouquet Canyon just north of Wellston.”
Shoemaker said the car then collided with a large utility pole.
“The impact crushed the car and the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene,” Shoemaker said.
Straughan was an alumnus of Bowman High School. His Facebook profile in July identified him as a Marine Corps recruiter, he was at one time an active duty Marine, but not a recruiter, according to Gunnery Sgt. Justin Kronenberg of the USMC Recruiting Command.
