The College of the Canyons student-led Social Issues Forum Club will host an engaging presentation on sexual assault prevention, with students, staff and community members of all ages invited to attend.
Primarily designed to help inform the campus and surrounding community, the presentation will help attendees better understand the prevalence of sexual assault in society and how to help prevent it, while also examining the issue of sexual assaults on college campuses across the nation.
Guest speaker Jessica Romo from ‘Strength United’ — a multidisciplinary community agency housed on the campus of California State University, Northridge (CSUN) — will also be on hand to discuss these issues.
“According to statistics provided by RAINN, the nation’s largest anti-sexual violence organization, one in four female college students will be the victim of a sexual assault before graduating, yet fewer than five percent of all completed/attempted rapes of college women are actually reported to law enforcement,” said Pamela Williams-Paez, COC sociology professor and Social Issues Forum Club advisor.
“In fact, college-aged women are four times more likely than any other demographic to be the victims of sexual assault,” added Paez. “That’s what makes this presentation so important to our student population, and indeed, our entire community.”
The hour-long presentation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, in Mentry Hall, Room 343, located on the college’s Valencia campus.
This event is free and open to the public.
More About the COC Social Issues Forum Club
The COC Social Issues Forum Club is focused on providing a forum that allows students to discuss contemporary social issues from various cultural lenses.
Its mission is to help students develop as leaders by meeting to exchange views on a variety of issues, which in turn helps raise social awareness. The club also provides a safe place for members to share their stories/ideas and debate about topics that interest them.
Through participation, members will become better prepared to identify elements of their own cultural identity and develop the skills necessary to assess and effectively communicate with the wide variety of personalities found in multicultural environments.
Everyone is welcome regardless of belief system.
This year the club is focused on raising awareness on topics surrounding gender, sexuality and sexual assault.
