For an evening of brass virtuosity, New York-based jazz trumpeter Peter Evans brings his “prodigious technique and catholic tastes” to a special performance at California Institute of the Arts. Evans will perform with CalArts’ New Millennium Brass Ensemble, conducted by faculty Edward Carroll.
The concert will take place in the Wild Beast Pavilion on the CalArts campus in Valencia on Friday, December 5 at 8 p.m. Admission is free of charge.
Evans and the Ensemble will play innovative compositions that include modern music pioneer Charles Ruggles’ Angels from 1940, Estonian Arvo Pärt’s 1991 work Summa, and Canadian-Estonian wunderkind Riho Esko Maimets’ Media Vita from 2012.
“On any given night in New York, you could run into trumpeter Peter Evans,” notes Jazz Speaks. “He could be playing downtown with the acclaimed bebop terrorist band Mostly Other People Do the Killing playing uptown at Lincoln Center with the International Contemporary Ensemble or… playing at a Brooklyn club with his own trio.”
Evans specializes in improvisational and avant-garde music. He has been part of the New York jazz scene since 2003, when he moved to the city after graduating from the Oberlin Conservatory with a degree in classical trumpet performance. Evans has toured internationally and released numerous albums. He works in a wide variety of areas, including solo performances, chamber orchestras, free improvised settings, electroacoustic music, and composition.
