sheriffbadgeA deputy was transported to the hospital after suffering severe head injuries during a domestic violence call early Thursday morning in Canyon Country.

The incident occurred in the 26700 block of Isabella Parkway when a father held his children at knifepoint in a bedroom, according to Shirley Miller, a public information officer for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“The father was locked in the bedroom with two kids and deputies tried to get him to open the door. Deputies were told he had an 8 inch blade so they forcibly opened the door,” said Miller.

The father then charged the deputies and a violent struggle ensued. There was a violent struggle and a male deputy was pushed into a wall, according to Miller.

The deputy was transported to a local hospital in serious condition.

The suspect was arrested and held on $50,000 bail at Twin Towers Correctional Facility. None of the children were injured during the incident.

LASD News Release by PIO Shirley Miller:

During the early morning hours of Thursday, Jan. 21, 2016, the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station received a frantic 9-1-1 call from a female who reported she was assaulted by her husband at their residence in the 26700 block of Isabella Parkway in Canyon Country. She indicated that her husband was emotionally disturbed and had barricaded himself in the bedroom along with their two young children, ages 3 and 5.

When responding deputies arrived on scene, the mother informed them that the father had armed himself with a knife, had blocked the bedroom door with a dresser and had the two small children with him. Deputies established communications with the father and were able to persuade him to open the door a crack. During their conversation, the distraught father reportedly told deputies that “he wanted to die tonight.”

As deputies continued to speak with the distraught man and try to help him, he dropped the knife, but still refused to open the door. Seizing their opportunity to rescue the two small children, the deputies quickly formulated a plan to gain entry into the bedroom.

To distract the father, a deputy outside of the home forcibly broke a bedroom window while deputies inside the home simultaneously pushed the bedroom door open. As soon as the deputies made entry into the bedroom, the agitated man immediately charged at them and attacked. A violent struggle ensued wherein a Deputy assigned to Santa Clarita Station was assaulted by the man and aggressively thrust into the wall causing significant head trauma and injuries to his upper torso. Additional deputies at the scene were subsequently able to restrain the man after a brief struggle and take him into custody. The children were rescued and were not injured.

The injured deputy was transported to an area hospital where he is undergoing treatment and is listed in serious condition. The suspect was also transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries sustained during the altercation with deputies. He was subsequently cleared for booking. The suspect, whose name is being withheld due to H.I.P.P.A laws, is being held on Domestic Violence related charges, Assault on a Peace Officer, Cruelty to Children, and Dissuading a Victim. He is being held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station in lieu $50,000 bail.

Suicide is permanent but problems are temporary.

Domestic Violence:
Each year, more than two million people are victims of domestic violence, and one million children are physically abused. Domestic violence knows no socioeconomic boundaries. It is one of the most emotionally and physically destructive crimes facing our society. The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office has an established countywide Domestic Violence Hotline: 1-800-978-3600. The District Attorney’s Victim-Witness Assistance Program assists victims of domestic violence. They have advocates to provide court support, referrals for counseling, and can assist in locating an appropriate shelter if needed..
